DESIGNING SEATED LEG PRESS WITH ENHANCED GLUTE MUSCLE ACTIVATION AND COMFORT

1       PRODUCT ANALYSIS

1.1       First of all - why Seated?

Seated Leg Press is designed to eliminate spinal compression.

1.2       Typical designs.

1.2.1    Typical Leg Presses are rail gliding designs, they are designed with an adjustable seat carriage which accommodates different user body sizes and offers desired range of motions.

1.2.2    Some are designed with stationary seat, with front pedal moving on a 4 bar linkage system instead.

1.2.3    Whatever design it is, seated leg press should mimic a SAFE, CONTROLLED free body squat. (see below motion)

1.3        Pain points and fixes.

1.3.1    Major paint point: Not enough burn on the butt! Many users complain their glute muscles don't feel much of exercise during seated leg press. In other words it cannot compare to standing free body squat.

1.3.2    Fix. This is because many machines don't offer enough flexor torque on user's hip. Think when a person does a regular free body squat with barbells, there is knee torque and there is hip torque. When the user is countering the barbell weight on their shoulder to stand up from a squat position, both their knees and hip counter the flexor torques. The problem is, lots of seated leg press doesn't offer plenty of hip torque due to the way the machine moves constraining the user's hip flexing movement. However, by giving a DESCENDING PATH OF MOTION on user's foot makes up to a certain extent for the lost hip torque (the user's feet not only go forward but go down too). There forth we see many seated leg presses has quite big angles on their rails, such as Life Fitness Insignia Leg Press, Precor Discovery Leg Press, Matrix Ultra Leg Press, all having somewhere from 30-35 degree angles. Technogym increased their Leg Press rails angle by about 5 degree when they changed their Selection Leg Press to Artis Leg Press – which is further move to improve the glute activation (below picture shows Life Fitness Insignia having a big angle of rails)

1.3.3    Minor paint point: fixed backrest (backpad). Some bigger people complain the seat backrest doesn't recline enough to accommodate their body size.

1.3.4    Fix. Adding recline positions, this allows the user to choose their desired angle to emphasize comfort, it also gives them options to either use a more natural free body squat position, or a flexed hip position. (See below Cybex Eagle Leg Press has an adjustable backrest offering different reclines)

1.4       Key to Success.

1.4.1    The KTS is: Finding the right way to create a HORIZONTAL FREE BODY SQUAT motion. Offering plenty of hip torque to burn the user's gluten muscles. (Below picture shows mimicking the motion of free body squat, horizontally)

1.4.2    How to - there are 3 ways.

1.4.2.1    Make the seat automatically recline to mimic the free body squat's standing straight motion. This design can be achieved on a rail gliding leg press by adding a linkage system to allow the user to use their glute muscle to tilt the seat to recline when the user is finishing each travel. (potentially patentable).

1.4.2.2    Make up for the missing hip torque by offering a descending path of motion pedal. This can be done by using a four-bar linkage system with the bottom pivot point close to the user's seating position. The closer the pivot is, the more descending path of motion it offers. This design can be achieved on a stationary seat, moving pedal leg press. (below picture shows a similar design from Cybex VR3)

1.4.2.3    Simply adding angle to the seat rails.

1.4.3    Benchmarks for references of design: Hoist RPL Leg Press offers a descending path of motion pedal. Cybex Eagle NX Leg Press offers a reclining seat carriage.

2       PRODUCT SOLUTION

2.1       Creating a plate loaded leg press, by using a descending path of motion pedal press arm mechanism, combined with a reclining seat. Also look into linkage of the pressing movement to the backrest reclining, potentially allowing user press and recline at the same time thus mimic the standing free body squat the most. This will be one and only and potentially patentable in the industry.
