咖啡的渣,土壤的药?

After brewing, the “waste” may be more than a waste!

萃取后的渣,可能是土壤的药?


Every day when you are brewing your coffee,with a filter, a moka pot, an expresso machine, an aeropress or whatever, haveyou ever think about the large quantity of spent coffee grounds may be something more than just waste?

每天当你用手冲、摩卡壶、意式机、爱乐压,或者什么别的方式制作咖啡的时候,你有没有想过,产生的咖啡渣可能有更大的用途?



Here, researchers from the field of environmental sciences and engineering may give you a brand new and surprising idea it could be a potential material to reduce the harm of heavy metals in soil!

现在,环境科学和工程领域的研究学者也许会带给你不一样的idea!咖啡渣也许可以用来降低土壤中重金属的危害!


Last November, I attended the 9th Sino-French joint lab “ECOLAND” Workshop – Reclamation & Valorization ofMine Sites & 1st IIES Workshop-soil contamination &Remediation.  (Yes, the name of is that long, don’t doubt.)

去年11月,我参加了“第九届中-法土壤污染与修复学术研讨会:矿区复垦与稳定”暨“第一届国际环境科学中心土壤污染与修复专题研讨会”(是的,不用怀疑,这个学术会议名字就是这么长。)


PhD student Andrew Innes from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and the University of Edinburgh (lead supervisor Dr Jennifer Carfrae (SRUC)) presented their work on spent coffee grounds as a solution for lead mining remediation. They used spent coffee grounds from local starbucks, a material so familiar to all of us.

来自苏格兰城市学院(SRUC)和爱丁堡大学联合培养的博士生 Andrew Innes(第一导师为SRUC的Jennifer Carfrae博士),在会议上介绍了他和他团队的研究成果。他们利用来自本地星巴克的咖啡渣作为土壤改良剂,施用到受铅污染的矿区土壤中。



In their study, a calcareous Pb/Zn mine spoil was placed in a leaching column, amended with spent coffee grounds and assessed for ecological developments and changes in potential toxic element availability (PTE). Gas, leachate and soil conditions were monitored for improvements in microbial activity, soil structure and PTE fractionation.

研究过程中,他们把石灰质的受铅和锌污染的矿区土壤填到淋溶土柱中,并添加一定量的咖啡渣,观察过程中的微生物生态变化和潜在毒性元素有效性(PTE)。同时监测过程中产生气体、滤液和土壤的状态,并描述这些参数与微生物活性、土壤结构及PTE变化的关系,尝试说明咖啡渣改良土壤的机理。


 

Results showed that coffee grounds appear to have a positive biological effect, with improvements in microbial activities and soil structure. That’s because, as anorganic amendment, coffee grounds is a good material to provide nutrients and energy to microbial communities (as coffee is providing us energy.)

研究结果表明,施加到土壤中的咖啡渣可能是通过提高微生物活性和改善土壤结构对土壤生物效应起到良性作用。咖啡渣可以为微生物群落提供营养和能量(就像咖啡每天为我们提供能量一样!)。


However, some evidence of soil acidification, PTE leaching and increased bioavailability of toxic elements was observed. In this case, more research should be conducted to understand the long term effect and mechanisms.

但是,研究中也发现咖啡渣的施用可能引起一定程度的土壤酸化,毒性元素的浸出也可能有所提高。因此,在进一步将咖啡渣作为土壤改良剂之前,一定要经过长期实验验证。

 

So next time when you are serving coffee, maybe you will have a brand new idea on thespent grounds.

所以,下次当你萃取咖啡的时候,也许你会对咖啡渣有全新的认识吧!

        这里要解释一下,为什么这期文章是中英文对照的。会后,在下马上把发公众号的事情和Andrew说了,他很谨慎,表示最好先把稿件发给他和他导师看看,因为对于学术圈的人来讲,数据是很重要的,发文章之前都不想过多透露细节。所以当时在下就写了英文稿给他们看完再翻译成中文。

       Andrew和他导师看完后还是比较满意的,表示他们准备开一个化学方面的blog,并表示希望把这篇文章的link post上去。。。至于怎么操作,那又是另外的问题了。
