Surely the artist is one who is skilled in action. This action is in life and not outside of life. Therefore if it is living skilfully that truly makes an artist.

擅长行动的人无疑就是艺术家。这行动是生活之中的,并不在生活之外。因此,如果娴熟地生活,那就真正地造就了一个艺术家。

I do not know if you have ever noticed that when you do something completely, not only with the intellect but with all your heart and mind, then such an action—which is a complete action—has neither past nor future. It is complete; and in that complete action there is beauty and there is love. And that is what’s missing in our lives; we don’t know this complete action which has neither the past nor the shadow of the future.

我不知道你是否曾经注意到,当你全心全意地做某件事情时,不仅仅是用智力,你还投入了你的内心和头脑时,这样的一个行动——那是完整的行动——既没有过去,也没有未来。它是完整的,这个完整的行动之中有美、有爱,而那就是我们的生活中所缺失的东西;我们不知道这种既没有过去、也没有未来阴影的完整行动


It is action which is complete, immediate and urgent. And in that action there is a flame; it may bring about a tremendous revolution outwardly as well as inwardly. You have noticed how a river changes course when it is blocked by a big rock; the whole river has taken a totally different turn. In the same way an action which is whole, which is complete, not touched by our environment, by our inclination or personal tendencies, such an action does bring about a different way of life.

How is that freedom to act to come about? How is the mind to act without the past—the past being the conditioning as a Hindu, the past being the result of influence, education, race? If you act in these terms, then you are not meeting the crisis. The question is: how is a mind to act that is free from the past, free from the implication of ‘to be’?

那种行动的自由要怎样才能到来?心如何才能没有过去地行动?——而过去是作为印度教徒的制约,过去是影响、教育和种族遗传的产物。如果你以这样的方式行动,那么你就没有面对危机。问题是:摆脱了过去、摆脱了“成为”这个词其含义的心,会如何行动


If you have understood the question, then you will see that what is important is perception, the seeing, observing. If there is an interval between perception and action, that interval is time. When you see danger, which may cause harm physically, your response is instant; there is no thinking about it. There is no interval between perception and action, no gap; there is immediate response and action.

如果你理解了这个问题,那么你就会发现,重要的是洞察、看到、观察。如果看到和行动之间有一个间隔,那个间隔就是时间。当你看到危险,那个危险可能导致身体上的伤害,那么你的反应就是即刻做出的,没有思考余地的。看到和行动之间没有间隔、没有空当,只有即刻的回应和行动

When you look at this life of action - the growing tree, the bird on the wing, the flowing river, the movement of the clouds, of lightning, of machines, the action of the waves upon the shore, - then you see, that Life itself is action, endless action that has no beginning and no end. It is something that is everlastingly in movement, and it is the universe, God, bliss, reality.  

当你看着生活里的行动——成长的树木,展翅飞翔的鸟儿,潺潺流动的河流,以及云朵、闪电、机器的活动,还有沿岸浪花的活动等等——那么,你就会看到,生活本身就是行动,无始无终、永无止尽,它是永恒运动着的东西,它就是宇宙、上帝、喜乐和真实。

Ideas offer a means of postponing action.  Therefore the more the ideas, the more ideals you have, the more inactive you are. Please do see this: when you act from an idea you are not active, because you are living your life in a world of fiction without any reality.  So, escape, postponement, offering a continuity which gives you a habit, and functioning from a habit - that is memory and therefore mechanical.  

观念为延迟行动提供了渠道。观念越多,你持有的理想也就越多,你就会变得越怠惰。请务必看到这点:当你出于观念采取行动,你就不是活生生的,因为你活在一个虚幻不实的世界里。因此,逃避、拖延,带来了延续性,这会让你养成习惯,然后根据习惯来生活——而那是记忆,因而很机械。


So, you can see ideas do not bring passion.  I think it is very important to understand this: to act, you must have passion; to do, you must have strong feelings; otherwise, it becomes mechanical.  You cannot have strong, intense, immediate feeling and passion if you have ideas.

因此,你能看到,观念不会带来热情。我认为了解这点很重要:要行动,你必须心怀热情;要做事,你必须怀揣强烈情感,否则就会很机械化。如果持有任何观念,你都不可能拥有直接而热烈的情感和热情。

'But we have to live in this world, and whatever we do, from earning a livelihood to the most subtle inquiry of the mind, has some motive or other.  Is there ever action without motive?'

Don't you think there is?  The action of love has no motive, and every other action has.

If you observe, go into the whole process of yourself without condemnation, you will find that the mind becomes extraordinarily sharp, clear and fearless; therefore the mind is capable of understanding such human problems as death, meditation, dreams, and the many other things that confront it.

如果你在关系这面镜子里观察自己的全部过程,你就会发现这是唯一必要的行动。对此你无需做任何事,只要对它作观察。如果你能不带任何谴责地对你自己的整个过程作观察、作深入的探究,你就会发现头脑变得极其敏锐、清晰和无惧,头脑因此就能够对人类存在的各种问题有所了解,诸如死亡、冥想、梦以及头脑所面临的一些其他的问题。

This division of action as the past in the present to produce a result in the future is the work of thought. Thought is the outcome of the past and so thought is always old. There is nothing new in thought, so when thought dominates action it ceases to be action but is only a result, an effect. But living, feeling, relationship are always in the present, the present being the active movement. So there is always a contradiction between what is and what has been, and so this action always produces conflict.

行动分为“过去”通过“现在”来产生一个“未来”的结果,这种做法正是思想所为。思想是过去的产物,所以思想永远都是陈旧的。在思想里没有任何新的东西,当思想支配行动时,行动就不再是行动,而只是一个结果、一种影响。但生活、感受、关系永远是现在的,现在是指这个活跃的此刻。所以“现在如何”和“曾经如何”之间一直会有矛盾,因而这种行动将不断产生冲突。


When one sees this whole structure of what we call action, with its resultant conflicts, one asks oneself whether action can spring not out of thought but out of a state of mind that is utterly quiet and silent. Only then can action be not a result, and so not productive of pain and sorrow. The emptying of the mind of the past is meditation; and then action is meditation. After all, living is action in relationship. For the mind to free itself from the image of the past is the action of meditation.

当一个人看到我们所谓行动的整个过程,以及由此而来的冲突,他就会问自己行动是否可以不由思想产生,而是来源于一种彻底安宁寂静的心灵状态。只有在那时,行动才不是一个结果,也因此不会产生痛苦和悲伤。清除心中的过去就是冥想;于是行动就是冥想。毕竟,生活就是关系中的行动。心灵将自己从过去的形象里解脱出来就是冥想的行动

In discovering right values, action is born out of completeness that is harmonious, spontaneous, and that action is of life itself, and therefore it is infinite. To me, action is not achievement. An action which is born out of a desire for achievement is no true action, it is limitation; whereas, action born out of the spontaneity of fullness is infinite.

在发现正确价值观的过程中,诞生于完满的行动,是和谐的、自发的,那行动来自生命本身,因而是无限的。对我来说,行动不是成就。行动若产生于想要成就的愿望,就不是真正的行动,而是局限;然而,行动若诞生于完满的自发性,它就是无限的。


As we are free to choose, and our action is born out of that choice, and there is no discernment, our action is limited; it is not spontaneous. Whereas, when action is born through the discernment of right values—which comes only when you question intensely, as in a crisis— then such action is infinite and spontaneous, because it is not born out of choice.

因为我们可以自由选择,我们的行动诞生于那选择,那么其中就没有洞察力,我们的行动是局限的,不是自发的。但是,如果行动诞生于对正确价值观的洞察——只有当你强烈质疑,就像在危机中那样,这种洞察才会到来——那么这样的行动就是无限的、自发的,因为它并非诞生于选择。

If we could, without a movement of thought or escape, hold our sorrow, then that very action of not moving away from the fact brings out a total release from that which has caused pain.
