La vie des objets en Chine

L’étude de la culture matérielle occupe une place grandissante dans le domaine des sciences humaines et sociales depuis une vingtaine d’années. Ce « tournant matériel » s’est construit autour de l’idée que les objets – objet naturel, objet technique, œuvre d’art – doivent être considérés comme des documents à part entière dans la construction d’un discours historique, voire comme des acteurs de la sphère sociale ; doués d’une vie propre, dotés d’une intentionnalité et susceptibles de conditionner ou de transformer les comportements humains. Une attention particulière est dès lors portée aux conditions sociales, économiques et matérielles de production et de diffusion des artefacts, à leur histoire et à leurs usages, et plus largement à leur « biographie » ou « vie sociale », afin de rendre compte de leur capacité à revêtir des rôles différents suivant les époques. Parallèlement, les rapports que les hommes établissent avec les objets qui les entourent, qu’ils fabriquent, dont ils se servent et qu’ils échangent font, depuis aux moins les années 1960, partie intégrante des problématiques des historiens travaillant sur la culture matérielle.

Quel écho cet intérêt grandissant pour les objets et la culture matérielle trouve-t-il dans le domaine des études chinoises ? À travers des exemples issus de disciplines et d’époques variées, cette journée de l’AFEC se propose d’étudier la façon d’aborder les objets dans les sciences humaines et sociales – qu’il agisse d’objets du quotidien, d’objets naturels, de biens de consommation, d’instruments techniques ou scientifiques, d’objets de savoir, d’objets de dévotion, d’objets rituels ou d’objets d’art. Faisant dialoguer des spécialistes issus de différents champs disciplinaires (histoire, histoire de l’art, archéologie, histoire des sciences et techniques, anthropologie, littérature, sociologie…), elle s’attachera à analyser la vie, la carrière et les éventuelles métamorphoses de valeur, de statut et de fonction des objets, ainsi que les relations que ces artefacts entretiennent avec les individus – sans oublier d’en interroger les usages sociaux, en s’intéressant à leur dimension religieuse, symbolique, politique, économique, affective, mémorielle ou encore patrimoniale.

Chinese objects and their lives

Over the last twenty years, material culture studies have occupied a growing place in the social sciences. These studies are founded on the idea that objects—natural, technical or artistic—can be considered documents for the writing of history, or even as actors in the social sphere, where they are capable of conditioning or transforming human behaviour. Therefore, special attention has been given to the social, economic and material conditions of their production and diffusion, their history and uses, and more broadly to their “biographies” or “social lives” in order to account for their ability to take on different roles in different periods. The relationships that people build with objects that surround them, are created by them, or used and exchanged by them, have been an integral part of the issues confronting historians studying material culture since, at least, the 1960s.

How does this growing interest in objects and material culture reveal itself in Chinese studies? Choosing from different disciplines and different periods, this AFEC workshop aims to examine how to approach objects in the humanities and social sciences—from everyday objects to natural objects, consumer goods, technical or scientific instruments, objects of study or devotion, or ritual objects and works of art. By bringing together specialists from different fields (history, art history, archaeology, technology, anthropology, literature, sociology, etc.), the workshop will explore the life, trajectory and the possible metamorphoses of the value, status and function of objects, as well as the relationships these artefacts have with individuals—raising in addition questions of their social uses—by focusing on their religious, symbolic, political, economic, emotional or memorial dimensions.
