The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint with a wide range of movement. Shoulder injuries are pretty common in strength sports [1]. Being mindful of this in your training by working on developing balanced shoulders is a good idea.
-
One of the first things to consider is whether your training contains enough pulling exercises. Focusing solely on upper body push exercises and neglecting upper body pulling can lead to posture issues (e.g. rounded forward shoulders) as a result of overdeveloped front deltoids/tight pectorals. So seek to have a similar amount of push and pull exercises in your program.
-
Also, strengthening the rotator cuff muscles by training them directly can help with improving shoulder stability [2]. Most people can use some work on the external rotation of the shoulder joint, exercises like facepulls and cable external rotation help with this.
-
Lastly, having proper shoulder mobility is essential for injury prevention. Forcing your shoulder into positions it is not used to during heavy strength training should be prevented. Work on improving the range of motion of your shoulders first before seeking to train with greater ranges of motion.
