“AGI New Members 2007-2017” is coming soon!

This book is edited and designed by well-known designer Mr. Jianping He, and published by Hesign Publisher in Germany. It is expected to be available in early August 2018. The book includes most updated design works of more than 200 new members of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) from 2007 to 2017.

——“What were your impressions of AGI before you became a member and how have these changed since you became a part of it?”

——“How do you see graphic design developing in the future and how do you see yourself evolving along that path?”

——“More immediately, what challenges are graphic designers facing today?”

——“While electronic and time-based media are now omnipresent, what role do you see printed media playing now and in the future?”

Besides, each new member also expresses his/her opinions on current situation that graphic design is now facing.

Since its inception in 1951, AGI has been assembling an international community of graphic designers. Members share the conviction that graphic design is fundamental to how societies communicate, educate and inform. AGI’s aim to promote graphic design by means of talks, publications and educational activities has remained unchanged, although the perspective has shifted since then.

I regard AGI as a positive, forward-looking force. We choose to engage ourselves with new technologies, current cultural debates and urgent societal issues that seem to challenge the established conventions around our profession. To address these topics we have looked at activities around heritage, education, social issues and new technologies. On the topic of heritage, we note that the highly popular AGI social media platforms have connected us to an eager audience of students and researchers who take a keen interest in the influential works of AGI’s past and present members. This growing interest could be linked to AGI’s presence in education. Many members are involved in teaching and AGI is now creating a global platform of educators through which we hope to influence the debate on the future of design education.

As professionals we might enjoy the recognition that comes with being AGI members. But the honours come with responsibilities. Over the three years of my presidency I have learned what that means. It was the cause of sleepless nights and just as often it has been a joy to add some new stones to this magnificent 67-year old construction, handbuilt by a community of relentless optimists who never fail to surprise us.

As social media becomes more and more popular, people’s voices can be easily uttered and transferred. Since individual’s opinions can be spread without any obstacles, the meaning of the existence of an association might be doubted. The get-togethers that used to be organised by organisations, in forms of meetings, discussions or protests, now seem manageable through e-platforms by an individual. Does AGI, as an association, still need to exist?

Similarly, is there anyone who can resist a tablet? The heavy nature of paper books, raised questions on how they could be carried, transported, saved, searched and arranged, which advances the characteristics of e-devices such as iPad. Are paper books still meaningful because of the powerful Internet? Are designers’ skilled painting techniques and paper recognising abilities still meaningful?

I used to question the meaning of my work, I was absent-minded for a while and was afraid of knowing the answer. But finally, I let it go. It was not because I found out the answer, it was because I distracted my attention: I do not care about the answer any more. AGI, to me, is not only an association, but also somewhere that carries my promising expectations on graphic design. When I design and publish a book, I do not really care about its sales volume, whereas I pay much attention to what paper books could approach instead of e-books.

And then any effort would pay off.
