今天是2018年11月第四个星期四，是有“家庭日”之称的感恩节（Thanksgiving Day）。对美国人来说，感恩节是一个非常重要的节日，在这一天，再忙碌的美国人也会赶回家中，与亲人团聚，共享美味的晚餐。感恩节晚宴的餐桌上必不可少的菜肴当然非火鸡（turkey）莫属，此外，还有感恩节的传统佳肴南瓜派（pumpkin pie）和酸果沙司（cranberry sauce）等。

NO.1 “感恩节”的别称

Turkey Day

感恩节其中一个别称是“Turkey Day”，这与感恩节的主菜“火鸡”有关，通常美国人也使用缩写“T-Day”来指代“感恩节”。

在美国纽约，感恩节还被称为“Macy’s Day”，这源于从1927年开始的美国梅西感恩节大游行(Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade)，游行由美国梅西百货公司主办，通常在感恩节上午的9:00开始，各式各样的玩偶、花车队伍从第77街出发，前往位于第34街的百货公司，持续三个小时，数万人参加，声势浩大。

除了以上别称外，感恩节还有一个特别的名字——“Yanksgiving”，这是同样过感恩节的加拿大人对美国“感恩节”的称呼。

NO.2 加拿大的感恩节比美国早一个月

在全世界范围内，人们最为熟知的在11月的第四个星期四开始的感恩节，其实是美国的感恩节，而在与美国毗邻的加拿大，感恩节是在十月的第二个星期一，比美国要早上一个月。

 

In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November but in Canada, it is celebrated on the second Monday in October (which is Columbus Day in the U.S.).

 

除了时间上的差异，两个国家的感恩节在假期、历史渊源与节日意义上也不尽相同：

虽然美国和加拿大感恩节在许多方面都不相同，但吃火鸡的习俗却非常一致。

NO.3 为什么火鸡叫“土耳其”？

感恩节必备菜肴“火鸡”的英文名称是“turkey”，与土耳其（Turkey）撞名，为什么餐桌上的火鸡要被叫做“土耳其”呢？

 

美国历史学家认为 “turkey”这个名字原是属于与火鸡外形十分相似的另外一种禽类，珍珠鸡。珍珠鸡是非洲的禽类，15世纪，被端上欧洲餐桌的珍珠鸡通常是通过当时的商业中心土耳其的君士坦丁堡进口的，所以欧洲人称其为“土耳其鸡”，简称“turkey”。等到欧洲人在美洲大陆上第一次发现火鸡时，便直接称其为“turkey”了。

 

American historians believe that the name originally belonged to a different bird entirely. The guinea fowl（珍珠鸡）, which bears some resemblance to the wild turkey, was a bird native to Africa. Following domestication, these birds became a trade commodity, and European countries started to import guinea fowls for food. This trade route from Africa to Europe happened to cross through Turkey, and because the birds were imported through Turkey, some European countries began to refer to guinea fowls as 'turkey birds'.

NO.4 Jingle bells最初是写给感恩节的歌

每逢圣诞，Jingle bells的音乐响彻每一条街，但你知道吗，这首歌最初是写给感恩节表达感恩之情的，只是后来被修改了歌词，成为了圣诞节“神曲”！

 

First published in 1857, the song was written by James Lord Pierpont, to be sung on Thanksgiving — not Christmas. There is some question as to where it was written — Massachusetts and Georgia both are plausible. Medford, Mass., where sleigh races were popular in the 1800s, claims itself as the birthplace of the song. There is a plaque at 19 High Street, the site of the former Simpson Tavern（酒馆）, where Pierpont was said to have penned the ditty in 1850. The original title of the song was “One Horse Open Sleigh（坐在单马雪橇上）,” but that was changed to “Jingle Bells, or the One Horse Open Sleigh” when it was reprinted in 1859.

其实关于感恩节还有一项非常有特色的活动——总统特赦火鸡。

每年感恩节前，全美火鸡联盟都会赠送一只火鸡给白宫，由美国总统亲手放生。这一传统仪式始于1947年杜鲁门总统当政时期。

 

2018年11月20日，美国总统特朗普在美国白宫特赦了2018年感恩节的两只火鸡——39磅重的“豌豆仔”(Peas)和41磅重的“萝卜丝”(Carrots)。
