Between 还是 Among，傻傻分不清楚

1. Lene and Daniel walked among the cherry blossom trees.

2. Lene and Daniel walked between the cherry blossom trees.

3. What is the difference between porridge, congee, and gruel?

4. What is the difference among porridge, congee, and gruel?

对于上面的四个例句，有这样两个问题：

* 这四个句子在现代英语中哪些是正确的？

* 对于正确句子，它们的句义相同吗？

中学阶段，通常老师在教我们分辨这两个词的时候所给的解释是：当谈论对象（即between和among后的名词或名词性成分）为两者时，选between，而当涉及三者及以上时，就需要选择among。实际上，这样的解释是很片面的，应付高考可能足够，但对于语言学习所要求的精确度来说，着实等于埋下了一颗地雷。带着上面的问题，我们一起来“查漏补缺”一下吧！

Between

从没有谁说过between只能在2的圈子里徘徊，但它的“起步价”的确是2，也就是所谈论的对象大于等于2。Between通常使用于当谈论的对象（人或事物）是所指明确，单独的个体。强调「明确」&「个体」。通过例子来体会一下：

An agreement was reached between China, Russia, US and UK.(✅)

An agreement was reached among China, Russia, US and UK.(❌)

一项协议在中国，俄罗斯，美国和英国之间达成。

Direct flights between Chengdu and London will be reopened early next year.(✅)

Direct flights among Chengdu and London will be reopened early next year.(❌)

成都和伦敦间的直飞航班将于明年初重新开放。

首先第一组例子中，因为句中明确地给出了名字，所以这里的四个国家是明确的，其次这四个国家是完全独立的个体，因此用between。第二组例子中，我们可以很明确地知道两个独立个体是Chengdu和London两个城市，因此也用between。

根据判断依据，我们也可以知道，当所谈论的主体含有的特征是处于某一特定区间内时，我们也应该用between，例如：

The teenagers are aged between 13 and 19.(✅)

The teenagers are aged among 13 and 19.(❌)

青少年们的年龄是介于13至19岁之间的。

这里明确地给出了两个时间节点，分别为13和19，同时这两个数字也是完全独立不相干的，因此符合判断依据，故用between。

Among

使用among时，所谈论的对象必须大于等于3。Among通常用于当谈论对象（人或事物）所指并不清楚，同时其是作为整体的一部分，或是聚集而成的一个集团而存在。侧重「模糊」&「集体」。同样来看两组例句：

There is a consensus among countries that peace promotes development.(✅)

There is a consensus between countries that peace promotes development.(❌)

在国家间存在着一个共识，即和平促进发展。

The pyramids are among the architectural wonders of the World.(✅)

The pyramids are between the architectural wonders of the World.(❌)

金字塔是世界建筑奇迹之一。

第一组例子中，谈论对象用一个复数名词countries来表示，对于有这样一个共识的集体成员到底是谁，数量多少一概不知，完全模糊，因此用among。对于第二组例子，每个国家都说自己的一些建筑是奇迹，但世界建筑奇迹到底有多少呢，我们不得而知，但我们统称它们为architectural wonders，满足模糊和集体两个判断依据，因此也用among。 

最后，我们回到最开始的两个问题。如果你很好的理解了上面所说的，相信这两个问题的答案也很显而易见了。

1. Lene and Daniel walked among the cherry blossom trees.

2. Lene and Daniel walked between the cherry blossom trees.

首先，在现代英语中两句都是正确的，但是两者的意思不一样。第一句，当Lene和Daniel在走的时候，他们被很多棵樱花树所围绕；第二句，在Lene和Daniel的左边有一棵／数棵樱花树，右边有另外一棵／数棵樱花树，他俩是走在这之间的间隔。

4. What is the difference among porridge, congee, and gruel?

porridge, congee和gruel之间有什么区别呢？

这两个问句都表示相同的意思，但是最好是使用between而不是among，因为这里是在谈论一些具体的东西（三种粥）而不是泛泛而谈。 

由此可见，在某些特定的语境中，虽然意思不同，但二者都可以被用在句子中。
