worth one's salt This idiom describes a person who deserves the pay he or she receives, or someone who is worth the cost. 这个俚语用来描述某人是配得上他所得的,或是值得所花费的;称职的;胜任的 在古罗马时期,盐是非常珍贵的。军人的工资的一部分就是盐。就好像我们古代军人的一部分工资就是米一样。后来慢慢演变,发盐也变成了发购盐证券,这个词叫做salarium,后来演变成了salary(工资)。所以后来salt(盐)就有了工钱的意思。这就好比贝克是我们古代钱的标志,所以现在贝字旁的一些字都是和钱有关的,比如财,购,赊等等。所以在英语中说worth one's slat 就是指某人很称职。 Any accountant worth their salt should be aware of the latest changes in taxation. 任何称职的会计都应该了解最新的税收变化。 |
