1. a detail He told us all the details (everything) of his life. 2. a feature The new Galaxy smartphone has many unique features /functions (things). 3. an item There are twenty items (things) on the shopping list. 4. an issue There are many controversial issues (things) surrounding the building of the shopping centre. 5. a matter This is very serious – it’s a matter (something) for the police. 6. a point The minister made some good points (things) during his speech. 7. a subject The book covers many subjects (things). 8. a topic The journalist writes about a wide range of topics (things). 9. a trait Kindness and generosity are good traits (things). 10. an attribute Stamina is a necessary attribute (thing) for a long-distance runner.
▪ Can I speak to Dave Williams, please? ▪ You can help yourselves to tea and coffee. ▪ I’m sorry, you can’t smoke here. ▪ May I take a message? ▪ Passengers may not leave the airport while waiting for a connecting flight. 1). May is more formal (正式)than can when asking for and giving permission: e.g. May I speak to Mr Jones, please? 2). We use may when we want to sound more polite (礼貌): ▪ May I offer you another drink, sir? 3). We see or hear may, not can, in official announcements(官方), and on signs: e.g. Hotel guests may use the gym from 6 a.m. May vs. can = formal vs. informal 所以May/ May not 用于表示礼貌的正式请求或给予许可。Look at the difference between these two signs:
e.g. people on low incomes. e.g. a weekly wage of 200. e.g. The job offers good rates of pay. ▪ 加薪20%就是:a 20% salary increase ▪ 付薪职位/领薪员工: a salaried position/employee. ▪ 薪水多少 : on salary of xxx. ▪ 年薪:annual salary of xxx 4.
▪ agenda:a list of items to be discussed at a meeting.( 会议)议程表,议事日程。 e.g. The next item on the agenda is the publicity budget. e.g. For the government, education is now at the top of the agenda. ▪ schedule:工作计划,日程安排 e.g. we are working to a tight schedule = we have a lot of things to do ▪ timetable:时间表,时刻表: a bus timetable ▪ timeline:时间线, 通常工作中我们会制定timeline来规定每一项任务的开始以及完成时间等。 ▪ bill: a piece of paper that shows how much you owe sb for goods or services |
