英语中的butter-fingers, flummox, the creeps, dustbin, ugsome, slangular都是他的发明。

Vices are sometimes only virtues carried to excess!

(Dombey and Son)

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.

(A Tale of Two Cities)

It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing so irresistibly contagious as laughter.

(A Christmas Carol)

You do not know...what men have done to win it (gold), and how they have found, too late, that it glitters brightest at a distance, and turns quite dim and dull when handled.

(Barnaby Rudge)

I love these little people (children); and it is not a slight thing when they, who are so fresh from God, love us.

(The Old Curiosity Shop)

The children of the very poor are not brought up, but dragged up.

(Bleak House) (1853)

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.

(David Copperfield)

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.

(Our Mutual Friend)

Charity begins at home, and justice begins next door.

(Martin Chuzzlewit)

Reflect upon your present blessings – of which every man has many – not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some. Fill your glass again, with a merry face and contented heart. Our life on it, but your Christmas shall be merry, and your new year a happy one!

(A Christmas Dinner)

There seems a magic in the very name of Christmas.

Then will Father Christmas die too?”(狄更斯死了?

Ellen Ternan

Buried in an inexpensive, unostentatious, and strictly private manner; that no public announcement be made of the time or place of my burial; that at the utmost not more than three plain mourning coaches be employed; and that those who attend my funeral wear no scarf, cloak, black bow, long hat-band, or other such revolting absurdity.

英国政府的解释是这是“人民的意愿”(will of the people)。

Our Mutual Friend

“In these times of ours, though concerning the exact year there is no need to be precise, a boat of dirty and disreputable appearance, with two figures in it, floated on the Thames, between Southwark bridge which is of iron, and London Bridge which is of stone, as an autumn evening was closing in.”
