Academy Awards 奥斯卡奖(May 16:美国历史上的今天)

On May 16, 1929, the first Academy Awards were presented during a banquet 宴会 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Only about 200 invited guests and news reporters saw the awards given out. People learned the names of the winners from newspapers. Today, millions of people around the world see the ceremony live on TV.

The Academy Awards are presented each year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences 电影艺术与科学学院. They are awards given for achievement in various categories 种类 of filmmaking. The award is gold statuette 小雕像 called “Oscar”. In 1931, the academy’s librarian said the statue looked like her uncle Oscar. From then on, the name was used.

Membership in the academy is by invitation only. There are now over 3,000 members in it. The members are divided into 13 branches. Each branch includes only people who do certain jobs in filmmaking. They include directors, photographers, producers, people in wardrobe 演出服, and actors. Each branch selects up to five nominees 被提名者 for awards in its own area work work. That is, directors select directors and photographers select photographers. All of the members can make a “Best Film” nomination 提名. The winners are chosen by a secret ballot 投票 in which all of the members vote on all of the nominees.

During the first awards ceremony, a silent movie called Wings won the best-picture prize. Emil Jannings and Janet Gaynor were named best actor and best actress. The movie Ben-Hur won 11 Oscars in 1979. Actress Katherine Hepburn and director John Ford each won four Oscars, the most given to an individual.
