It was first shown on the cover of a magazine. It was on the July 6, 1916 issue of Leslie’s Weekly《莱斯利周刊》. The United States was sending troops into World WarⅠ. The “I Want You” poster was a way of telling people to get involved in the war effort. Over 4 million copies were printed and displayed around the country. Twenty-five years later, the U.S. was fighting in World WarⅡ. The poster was used again. Everywhere they went, people saw the image of Uncle Sam looking and pointing directly at them. James Montgomery Flagg was born on June 18, 1877, in New York. When he was just 12, he sold his first drawing to a children’s magazine. Two years later, he was drawing for Life Magazine. In the early 1900s, he was one of the America’s leading illustrators插画画家. He drew pictures of Hollywood好莱坞 stars for Photoplay电影故事（杂志名）. He made drawings for many popular magazines. During World WarⅠ, he designed 46 posters for the US government. He said he used himself as the model for the “I Want You” poster. Many of Flagg’s pictures were collected into books and sold as a set. Flagg was also a portrait肖像 painter. He was skilled in using charcoal炭, crayon蜡笔, pen and ink, and oil paint. Flagg was known for his sense of humor. It often showed in the pictures he drew. James Montgomery Flagg died on May 27, 1960.
