以前住过的那些房子

常常出现在梦里，

要么没有房顶，或者房门洞开，

一团明亮从高处伸出手来

像探照灯紧追舞台上不停移动的人。

那些曾经熟悉的朋友

时常造访我梦里的房子，

而今我们忘了对方的电话。

醒来以后，我发现

我并未住过其中一些不存在的房子；

一度关系密切的朋友们

已经过上陌生人的幸福生活。

在一座城市多次搬家，

十四年后，我安顿了自己和藏书。

许多东西从城里消失，

包括租过的房子、几个朋友。

我的往日重现梦境，

在敞亮的房子里

朋友们走来走去，彼此从不认识。

Houses in Dreamland

Houses I lived in before

appeared and reappeared in my dreams,

either without a roof or with doors left open,

an arm of light reaching down from above,

like a spotlight chasing a player on stage.

Friends whom I was once familiar with

still come to visit in my dreamland,

but we have lost each other’s phone numbers.

Waking up from the dream, it’s clear

I didn’t live in any of those houses in real life,

and those old friends

are now living a happy life irrelevant to me.

After fourteen years in the city and many moves,

I finally managed to settled down with my books.

Many things have vanished from the city,

including houses I rented before, and a few friends.

But old times appear and reappear,

in a bright house in my dreamland,

where old friends come and go, not

recognizing each other.
