梦（dream）是大家每天都要做的，晚上做的梦，和白天做的梦。白天做的梦是梦想，是对未来的想法和目标。

一个人有远大的梦想是好事，但如果切实可行的条件，那梦想就如同烟雾一样虚无飘渺了。这时我们可以使用以下英语表达：

19世纪很多人有抽鸦片的坏习惯，鸦片是通过长长的烟枪（pipe）吸食的，而吸了鸦片的人，精神会处于一种迷幻的状态，误以为自己能做到很多的事。所说这个习语就来自于吸鸦片后的幻想（the fantasies brought about by the smoking of opium）。

当然，现在这个习语与鸦片没有关系了，它通常用于指某人的梦想或计划无法实现，只是“白日梦；幻想；空想”。

Her plans for a movie career
are just a pipe dream.

她计划进入电影来，这只能是个梦想。

He always has this pipe dream
about being a pop star.

他总是做着这种成为流行巨星的幻梦。

I want to buy a villa by the seaside
when I retire,
but so far it just appears to be a pipe dream.

我退休后想在海边买一栋别墅，
但现在看来只是一种空想。

Going to Tibet is a pipe dream.
I don’t think my health will permit me.

去西藏是个幻想，我想我的身体吃不消。

Your hopes of winning a lot of money
in the lottery are just a silly pipe dream.
