Lu Weiping

Lu Weiping was born in Hongan, Hubei Province in September 1965. He is the chairman of the Zhuhai Writers Association and editor-in-chief of Chinese and Western Poetry. In 1985, he started writing poetry and participated in the 15th “Youth Poetry Conference”. He has been awarded poetry awards including China’s third Chinese Language Youth Poetry Award and the Poetry Magazine Annual Outstanding Poet Award for 2008. More than 200 of his poems were selected for entry into China’s New Poetry Series. The poem collections Rat of a Foreign Land, Branches that Grow Downward, Earthly Life, Everyone in Place, Wine Cup, A Key to Open the Heavens, Ten Thousand or One, Guestbook, and more have been published. More than 20 of his poems, including Stone and Water and Meeting a Bunch of Apples on Fruit Street, have been translated into many languages including English, Portuguese, Swedish, and Russian.

Lu Weiping’s poetry writing, starting from the specificity of existence, sees new secrets in everyday things that we do not observe, and brings about surprise and a sense of novelty from everyday scenes, possessing a strong power of witnessing, and highlighting the complexity and richness of poetry using the drama of narrative, thereby continuing to expand the boundaries of poetry in the ambiguity of language.

Lu Weiping’s poem The Branches that Grow Downwards takes a submissive gesture and keenly captures things that awaken the blood or reveal the truth in an ordinary life, and illuminates them with the fire of human nature, thus establishing a lofty spiritual orientation for poetry. It is not difficult to see in Lu Weiping’s poems his intimate connection with the current state of Chinese existence. The collection of poems Everyone in Place, presents the poet’s extremely broad side of the “day-to-day self”. For those things that have been “depending on poets to live” for many years, in the poem Everyone in Place, everything returns to its original state. Under the calm surface are undercurrents and whirlpools, with introspection and sharpness that form a rare strain in poetry. Those seemingly small things and ordinary details can point directly to the core emotional experience of human existence, and enhance people’s ability to re-experience the world. The collection of poems Ten Thousand or One is an anthology of Lu Weiping’s poetry. He selected important works of poetry over the 30 years from 1985 to 2015, focusing on the strength and potential of an outstanding poet’s poetry creations. Lu Weiping is a poet who travels silently in the twilight of destiny. In the past hundred years of complex Chinese poetry, he has confirmed the unique existence of a poet by means of destiny, language awareness, and spiritual fables.

In recent years, Lu Weiping has devoted himself to the creation of The Guest Book, and plans to create three volumes, each with about 800 poems, each with three lines. The first was published by the Yangtze River Literature and Art Publishing House in November 2017. The first draft of the second volume has been completed and is now in revision. The Guest Book is a combination of poetry and thought. It uses fragments to restart completeness and highlights a modern creative spirit that deeply considers the details of daily life. The poets are attempting to add a line of scenery called “The Message Body” for modern Chinese poetry through the creation of The Guest Book.
