appreciate在这里不是感激的意思, 而是能够理解的意思
(not used in the progressive tenses) to understand that something is true

say在这里不是讲话的意思, 而是举例, 类似于我们之前学到的let’s say
You could learn the basics in,let’s say, three months.
Let’s take any writer, say (= for example) Dickens…

盖房子我们可以说build houses/home, 变成名词就是home-building/house-building
想到一个相似的词: bodybuilding: 撸铁长肌肉
碰到这样的合成词, 大家要多多注意, 因为我们平常接触的少, 这种词很难变成主动词汇

要充分理解这是多么的荒谬, 想象一下假如我们用这种方式来做生活中其它的事情, 比如, 盖房子

2 So we bring in the contractor, say, “told we have two weeks to build a/the foundation. Do what you can.”
所以我们带来包工的, 说: 我们有两周的时间来建造地基. 尽力而为吧

3 So they, they do what they can.
所以他们就尽力而为了

4 Maybe it rains. Maybe some of the supplies don’t show up.
也许下雨了. 也许某些原料没有(按时)抵达

5 And two weeks later, the inspector comes, looks around, says,”OK, the concrete is still wet right over there, that part’s not quite up to code … I’ll give it an 80 percent.
两周之后, 检查员过来, 四处看看, 说: 这里的混凝土还没干. 那边不太符合要求…我给个80分吧

6 Say, “Great! That’s a C. Let’s build the first floor.”
说: 好! 80分的话那就是C了. 咱们现在盖第一层吧
