on the table也确实可以翻译成“在桌子上”

但老师之前有说过英语里有很多

词组句子是不能单靠直译来理解的！

'on the table' 是什么意思？

我们先来看看谷歌上的释义：

它给这个词组的解释是：“提交讨论”

说的简单些，就是你提交的计划或建议

会被他人所讨论或者考虑

来看个例子

'In today's meeting, there're several new

proposals on the table.”

“在今天的会议上，有好几个新建议被提出来讨论。”

'good table' 是 “好的桌子” ？

table除了桌子外

还能是“饭菜”的意思

但这个表达比较正式

可用来特指餐厅的菜式

我们来看个例子

'That restaurant has good tables.'

“那家餐馆的菜不错。”

'under the table' 不是 “在桌子下面”

这个短语有两个意思

一个是“秘密的”

通常指经济上面的一些违法行为

另一个就是“喝醉；烂醉如泥”

看两个例子

（表达秘密的）

'Because I get paid under the table,

no taxes come out of my paycheck.'

“因为我是偷偷拿工资的，所以里面没有含税。”

（表达喝醉）

几乎到每个餐馆都能见到它

但老美是不用圆桌的

所以round table也自然不是圆桌的意思了

它用来表达“多人间的公开讨论”

比如

'We all need to get together and have a round table

to come up with a solution to this problem.'

“我们需要一起公开讨论并且提出这个问题的解决方法。”

'put food on the table' 不是 “把食物放在桌子上”

它是美国的一句俚语

意思是“养家糊口”

举个例子

'With my hours at work being cut so dramatically,

I just don't know how I'll be able to put food on the table.'

“我的工作被大幅消减，这样下去我都不知道怎么养家糊口了。”
