Revitalizing a town

CLIENT Town of Wasaga Beach

Located on what is known as the world’s longest freshwater beach, the town of Wasaga had been suffering a long decline. After engaging in several in-depth discovery workshops with the community, FORREC’s team of experts created a downtown development master plan that addresses the challenges and illuminates the opportunities. The resulting vision proposes a liveable, walkable, more compact downtown.

The plan features main street buildings of three to five storeys that accommodate ground level business and upper level residential use. A town square and community hub provide much needed year-round gathering spaces. A new roundabout improves traffic flow and new bridges enhance the over-the-river connection between the downtown and the famous beach. Walking trails, a cycling network and a beachfront boardwalk showcase the scenic river and the dramatic sand dune system. Amenities and mixed-use facilities downtown and on the beach, serve the needs of residents and tourists alike, making the town a thriving year-round destination.
