【原】under the weather，不要理解为“在天气之下”，它另有它意

根据作介词的 under 来判断，under the weather 无论如何也不会意为“在天气之下”，原因很简单，因为 under 在表示在什么下面时，指的是具体的某物下面，如 under the bed，在床底下等，而 weather 是抽象的，是一个不可数名词。

Beneath 和 below 也都可以用来表示位置，但是它们跟 under 还是有区别的；它们比较大的区别是：当表示某物被某物覆盖或紧贴着某物时，用 under，当表示脚底下直接接触的地面，或表示在一个人的能力、地位或期望方面处于较低的水平时，用 beneath，其他情况下用法相似；但是除了表示位置之外，under 其他的用法比 beneath 和 below 丰富多了，例如：

The student kept his mobile phone under his books.

那个学生把手机藏在书下面。

She could feel the train coming because the ground beneath her feet was moving.

她能感觉到火车来了，因为她脚下的地面在移动。

The training courses were good but maybe a bit beneath my expectations.

培训课程很好，但可能有点低于我的期望。

当 under 用来表示位置时，通常存在三种情况，一是在某物的下面（in a position that is below sth），二是到某物的下面（to a position that is below sth），三是通过某物的下面（through a position that is below sth），无论哪种，都表示在具体的某物下面，例如：

The cat is under the table.

猫在桌子下面。

She placed the ladder under the balcony.

她把梯子立在阳台下面。

The dog squeezed under the gate and ran into the road.

狗从门底下钻出去，跑到大路上去了。

当然 under 的用法或词性不单一，它作介词时，还有很多其他意思，如少于、由…控制、小于或根据等等，但无一个意思适用于 under the weather；当 under 意为“根据”等时，表示的是根据协议、法律或制度等，而不是天气，例如：

Under the terms of the lease you had no right to sublet the property.

按租约条款的规定，你无权转租这房产。

那么 under the weather 只能用于其他的寓意了；其实它是一个航海术语，来源于旧帆船时代。在过去，感觉不舒服的水手经常被派到甲板下，这样他们就可以避开恶劣天气。然而，我们今天使用的术语被缩短了，最初这个短语是 under the weather bow，其中 weather bow 是船头朝向风的一侧。

因此 under the weather 用来比喻感觉不舒服或不如往常，可以意为“略有不适；不得劲”，相当于 in a bad way，sick as a dog 等，常用跟在 be 和 feel 等系动词后面，例如：

I don’t feel like hanging out today. I’m feeling a bit under the weather.

我今天不想出去玩。我觉得有点不舒服。

My friends want me to go play with them at the park, but I’m under the weather today so I plan on staying inside instead.

我的朋友们想让我和他们一起去公园玩，但我今天身体不舒服，所以我打算呆在里面。
