【原】to death 和 to die 到底哪个是对的？很多人都说是 to die，其实不然

从构造上来看，to death 中的 death 是名词，那么 to 只能是介词了，而 to die 中的 die 是动词，那么 to 是不定式的标识符，那么它们意思是否一样，或者是否都正确，还是有其他的意思呢？

根据动词不定式的语法功能来判断，动词不定式 to die 可以充当不同的语法成分，例如：

作宾语：People like him shouldn't deserve to die like that.

像他这样的人不该这样死。

作定语：Should there be a legal right to die?

应该有合法的死亡权利吗？

Death 在发音上困扰了不少人，其实它尾部的发音跟 breath 的尾部发音是一样的，都是 [eθ]，因此可以结合一起记忆；to death 的字面意思是“到死”，表示生命的终止或死亡状态，例如：

Three children were burnt to death in the explosion.

三名儿童在爆炸中被烧死。

他因各种刑事犯罪被判处死刑。

正确：He was sentenced to death due to various criminal offences.

正确：He was sentenced to die due to various criminal offences.

需要注意的是，我们也可以说 be sentenced to die，它跟 be sentenced to death 的意思是一样的，唯一的区别是第一个 to 是动词不定式标识符，第二个 to 是介词，此时 sentence 常用被动。

当表示处死或处决某人时，还可以用 put sb to death，但不能用 put sb to die，例如：

The prisoner has to be put to death before tomorrow.

囚犯必须在明天之前被处死。

然而有的时候 to death 却跟“死”没有关系，而且实际意思还常常让人大吃一惊，此时相当于一个程度副词，意为“非常，极度”，类似于 very much，常用的搭配是：“…… to death”，例如：

The meeting bores me to death.

那次会议让我烦死了。

He's sick to death of the endless noise of the traffic.

这无休止的交通噪音让我烦死了。

因此涌现了一些固定搭配，常见的有习语 do sth to death，此时的 to death 也是表示程度，意为“做烦了，看腻了，听厌了”，例如：

Your talking big has been done to death.

你的大言不惭我都听腻了。

类似的还有 frighten/scare sb to death，意为“把某人吓得要命”，例如：

The ghost story my father told me scared me to death.

我父亲告诉我的鬼故事把我吓死了。

在英语中还有一个习语 to the death，虽然其中的 to 跟 to death 中的 to 都是介词，但其中 death 的含义却不尽相同；to the death 特指直到某个战斗或斗争等中有一名参与者死亡，意为“至死，到底”，例如：

There was a fight to the death between two men armed with knives.

两个持刀的人进行了一场殊死搏斗。

关于 to die，还有一个以其开头的习语 to die for，意为“不管怎么样都要”，例如：

We had a beautiful room at the hotel and the service was to die for.

我们在旅馆里有一间漂亮的房间，服务是无论如何也要享受到的。

此时我们要把它与“普通”的 to die for 区分开来，习语的 to die for 后面不接任何成分，而“普通”的 to die for 后面接名词性成分，表示为什么而死，例如：

The soliders were ready to die for the people.

士兵们准备为人民而死。
