NEW DELHI: In a major move towards ensuring drug security, India's import dependence for raw material to manufacture essential medicines is likely to reduce by 25% by around 2024, a top official said. This assumes significance as Indian drug manufacturers are dependent on China for import of around 53 active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) or pharmaceitical raw material used in medicines that are used in treatment of critical diseases such as tuberculosis, cancer, steroids and vitamins. While China caters to nearly 85-90% of local demand for these raw materials with a cost advantage, this has often been seen as a major threat to India's drug security, particularly in the face of bilateral relations with the neighbouring country. The raw material imported from China also goes into production of finished formulations that are exported from India to various other countries.
