【原】【知识小百科】Hyphen、en dash和em dash，你分清楚了吗？

最近小编参与项目，又遇到了hypen、dash之争。今天就找出一篇旧文，和大家一起复习下英语中hyphen、en dash和em dash 的区别。

先说说它们的“长相”。其中em dash的宽度相当于一个M字母的宽度，en dash相当于一个N字母的宽度，hyphen是最短的一个。

Hyphen

用于连接复合词，如eye-catching, all-in-one。

用于分隔数字或字母，如电话号码400-334-0029，或人名拼写“My name is Chandler, c-h-a-n-d-l-e-r.”等。

用于因断行而被打断的单词。

En dash

用于表示数字、时间或日期等的起止范围，相当于“to”或“through”，如“2000–2015”，“Chapters 8–10”，“11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.”；

注：如果表示from…to…或between…and…，不能用en dash代替其中的to或and，如：

She served as secretary of state from 1996 to 1999.（√）

She served as secretary of state from 1996–1999.（×）

用于显示比分，如“A beats B 20–18 in the final game”。

用于连接单词，表示两者之间的方向关系或其他关联，如“the Los Angeles–Shanghai flight”，“the east–south railway”。

Em dash

用于详细说明或解释，相当于一组逗号、圆括弧或冒号的用途。如：

And yet, when the car was finally delivered—nearly three months after it was ordered—she decided she no longer wanted it.

Upon discovering the errors—all 124 of them—the publisher immediately recalled the books.

用于分隔插入的想法或从句，如：

I can’t believe how pedantic Ken is about writing—doesn’t he have anything better to do?”

Em dash的用法相对比较灵活，一句话中不应包含两个以上的em dash。

不过也有很多人习惯用en dash前后加上space来替代上述em dash的用法。

去google搜一搜，就会发现众说纷纭，各有各的偏好。

如果是真实项目，就要预先确定好style guide，并在项目正式开始前获得客户确认，以免出现译者各行其是，最后一片混乱。

Microsoft Word中如何编辑

Hyphen：键盘上[0]和[=]之间的[-]键；

En dash：输入“单词-空格-hyphen-空格-单词”，中间的hyphen会自动变成en dash；

Em dash：输入“单词-hyphen-hyphen-单词”，中间的两个hyphen会自动变成em dash。
