【原】《中式英语之鉴》，中式英语再见。（九）

这周，我们继续来聊中式英语，了解一下代词和先行词 (pronouns & antecedents) 这个看上去很简单的语言点又会引入我们走入怎样的误区。

我们在第6期讲“重复指称”的文章中已经对代词的使用有所涉及，避免重复指称的方法之一便是用代词代替前面提到的成分，而这个成分就是我们今天要讨论的先行词。小伙伴们可以点击此处快速复习哦！

代词和先行词

书中首先给出了正确使用代词和先行词的四个要点：

1. 先行词需清晰说明，而非隐含暗示

2. 先行词需明确指向，不能模棱两可

3. 先行词需靠近代词，不能在中间插入过多干扰成分

4. 先行词和代词需在语法上保持人称、数、性的一致

接下来，让我们看一下先行词和代词没有符合上述四种情况时，会造成怎样的问题。

1.  先行词未清晰说明。

（1）没有出现先行词，让读者丈二和尚摸不着头脑。

A: The second question concerns close planting. It should neither be spread out too thinly nor planted too closely.

这个案例作者未提供原文，让我们推导一下，中文原文大致应该是：第二个问题涉及到了密集种植。它不应该种得太疏，也不能太密。

这个例子中it就无所指。在中文语境下，如果我们看到“密集种植”就马上能联想到具体种植作物的画面。对于中文这么一个特别依赖语境的语言，“它”的出现或许问题不大，因为中文读者会自行补上画面。但是英文极为讲究句内逻辑，因此出现代词必须有所指。我们在翻译时就需要将逻辑显化，明确写出代词所指，不能让读者去猜。

B: The second question concerns close planting. Crops should be neither spread out too thinly nor planted too closely. 

（2）代词锚定到了错误的先行词上，让读者产生误解。

A: Minutes of an interim telephone report to Mao Zedong during his investigation in Handan Prefecture, Hebei Province.

这是出现在《周恩来选集》中对一份材料的注解，指的是呈给毛泽东的电话纪要。注意这句话里面的his，是不是会自然而然让它和前面的人名发生关系呢？是毛泽东在河北邯郸调研时的电话纪要吗？有点奇怪。其实这里investigation的施动者是周恩来，但是这里用his就会让读者产生误解了。

B: Minutes of an interim report telephoned to Mao Zedong during an investigation in Handan Prefecture, Hebei Province. 

修订版本直接把his改成了an，因为整本书都是周恩来的文章选集，这里直接用an反而不会让读者产生误解。

2. 先行词模棱两可。

A: The price of one ton of crude oil is 1, 300 yuan ($175) on the market, while it is only 800 yuan ($96) if it is sold to the government.

B: The price of one ton of crude oil is 1, 300 yuan ($175) if it is sold on the market but only 800 yuan ($96) if it is sold to the government. 

这句话的大概意思是：市场上的原油价格是每吨1,300元，卖给政府时只需800元。

A版本出现了两个it，如果从句意上分析的话，第一个it指的是the price，第二个it指的是one ton of crude oil，it出现两次却指代不同先行词，未免让读者产生误解，这时就需要稍微调整一下使意思更加清晰。

我们在写作的时候脑子十分清楚，知道每个单词指的是什么意思，但是写完需要考虑一下读者感受，排除一切让读者疑惑误解的因素。Make your sentences clear and logical 是我们追求的基本目标。

3. 先行词离代词比较远。

A: In the meantime, the U. S. government increased its aid to the KMT government. In March 1946 the United States successively organized army and navy advisory teams. On June 17 they signed the Sino-American Lend-Lease Agreement, which transferred 51. 7 million U. S. dollars' worth of military equipment to the KMT government. 

这句话的大概意思是：与此同时，美国政府增加了对国民党政府的援助。1946年3月，美国先后组建了陆军和海军顾问小组。6月17日，他们签署了《中美租借协定》，后来在此协定下美国向国民党政府借出了价值5,170万美元的军用设备。

中文读起来似乎对“他们”这个定义不会产生误解，但是英文中离they最近的名词是teams，可能会让读者误会，因此这里需要直接把they所指代的内容写出来。

B: In the meantime, the U. S. government increased its aid to the KMT government. In March 1946 the United States successively organized army and navy advisory teams. On June 17 the two governments signed the Sino-American Lend-Lease Agreement, which transferred 51. 7 million U. S. dollars' worth of military equipment to the KMT government. 

上面这个例子是人称代词与所指的先行词相隔太远。而英语写作中经常把握不好的是另一类代词——关系代词。

A: To enforce the people's democratic dictatorship, we must launch an unremitting struggle against bureaucracy, which is of great importance.

这句话的大概意思是：为了加强人民民主专政，我们必须要坚持不懈与官僚主义作斗争，这非常重要。

如果从语法上分析，which可能指代离它最近的名词，也可能指代前面整个句子，这就有可能引起误解。也许小伙伴们会说了，这里意思很明确，怎么会搞错了？那可能是因为你在用中文思考哦，不自觉把这句英文转换成了中文，明白什么是重要的就不是难事。

但是，当我们面对一个陌生的语境、陌生的概念时，我们便会开始分析代词的具体所指，当你的已有知识没有办法帮助你的时候，你还能容忍这样的困惑吗？作为读者，我们不希望遇到这样的场景；作为译者，我们就有责任避免这样的困惑与不解。

B: To enforce the people's democratic dictatorship, we must launch an unremitting struggle against bureaucracy, a struggle which is of great importance. 

B版本在关系代词前面加了一个同位语就让这个问题迎刃而解了。小伙伴们可以从现在开始关注外刊，主句后面用一个“同位语+定语从句”的结构比比皆是。如果你恰巧之后读到了，别忘了来给我们留言哦！

4. 先行词和代词未保持人称、数、性的一致

If each enterprise goes it alone, they will never be able to improve the quality of their products.

这个例子有点太过简单，小编就不在这里赘述啦！等你们在评论区贴修改版本哦！

下面我们补充两个真实项目中的案例：

原文：眼前这位“年轻人”，显然超出了张谦的想象。但也许受到了激励，同样“年轻”的张谦没有收回他的脚步。

（选自纪录片《中国人的现代生活——梦想成真（一）》）

初译：This man is not as young as Zhang Qian thought he would be. But he seems excited to see a man of his own age, and he hasn’t retracted his offer.

注意第二句话出现的he，是不是需要你停下来思考几秒才能知道他指的是谁呢？尤其这句话是纪录片的字幕，观众没有时间去细想。其实译文稍微变通一下就可以避免这个问题。

审校：This man is not as young as Zhang Qian thought he would be. But Zhang seems excited to see a man of his own age, and he hasn’t retracted his offer. 

原文：16 年的辛勤耕耘，为培养“专业精英，社会栋梁”而执着，16 年的再接再厉，为实现“公益性、学术型、国际化”一流医院而奋斗。

初译：It has been 16 years of enduring efforts in developing clinical professionals that will safeguard the health of our people and building a leading international hospital of strong academic capabilities dedicated to benefit the general public.

中文里“我们”这一词出现的场合非常多，并且代表的含义不同。比如拒绝客户的翻译项目时，“我们最近没有时间了”中的“我们”指的是我们翻译团队；而完成了一个项目后对客户说“我们的合作很开心”，这里的“我们”又是包括客户了。

我们再来看看原文和初译，初译用的our people应该指的就是社会大众，那就不如直接翻出这个意思，而不是留给读者猜疑的空间。

审校：Over the 16 years of enduring efforts and constant improvements, SEH has dedicated itself to the development of “clinical professionals promoting social wellbeing,” striving to build a first-class hospital that is “international and strongly academic with a focus on serving public benefits.”

最后，小编希望以一段话呼应本文所讲解的内容：

中文重“悟性”，即不凭借严谨的形式，而是靠直观直觉，从逻辑及上下文“悟”出关系；而英文求结构上的严谨，要求句子中各成分之间的关系必须从形态上表现出来，句子往往用关系代词或关联副词等骨子成分连成一个整体（汪德华，2003：23）。
