妻子问：“难道除了请求你放了它，它就没有说别的话了吗？”
渔夫回答说：“它说它会好好儿感谢我。”
妻子听了非常高兴，连忙对渔夫说：“太好了，你赶紧到比目鱼那里去要一间草棚子吧。它既然答应会好好儿感谢你，就一定会满足你的要求。”
渔夫虽然很不乐意，但还是向海边走去。
到了海边，渔夫开始呼唤比目鱼：“比目鱼，比目鱼，快快出来吧！”
不一会儿，比目鱼就游了过来。
渔夫说：“我的妻子想要一间草棚子。”比目鱼回答说：“你回去吧，她现在已经住在草棚子里了。”
渔夫回到家里，一看，他们住的那艘破船不见了，一间崭新的草棚子立在那里，妻子正坐在门口的凳子上。妻子见到他，高兴地说：“真是太好了，草棚子里什么东西都有。”
渔夫说：“是的，我们可以愉快地生活了。”
可是过了两个星期，妻子对渔夫说：“这草棚子太小了额，要是能够拥有一座大宫殿，该多好啊！你到比目鱼那里去，叫它送给我们一座宫殿吧。”
渔夫说：“我们有了草棚子，应该知足了。”
渔夫回到家门口时，看到一座很大的石头宫殿，妻子正站在台阶上。妻子拉着他的手说道：“快进来，这是我们的家啊。”
妻子带着渔夫到处参观，还说：“这才是我想要的生活。”渔夫说：“是啊，太太，你现在一定心满意足了吧？”妻子却说：“暂时觉得满足了。”
可是，第二天天刚亮，妻子就叫醒渔夫，说：“你快点起来，到比目鱼那里去，说我要做女王。”渔夫说：“太太，你昨天不是说已经心满意足了吗？”妻子生气地说：“废话少说，你快点去吧。”渔夫没法，只好去了。
渔夫到了海边，小声地呼唤比目鱼。没过多久，比目鱼出来问：“你有什么需要我帮忙的吗？”
渔夫说：“我的妻子想当女王。”比目鱼说：“好的，你回去吧，她已经是女王了。”
于是渔夫回去了，刚走到宫殿门口，他就看见妻子正坐在金子做成的宝座上，头戴着大金冠，手里拿着纯金的手杖，两旁还站着许多侍臣。渔夫简直不敢相信自己的眼睛。
到了海边，渔夫胆战心惊地呼唤着比目鱼。过了很久，比目鱼游过来说：“你的妻子又有什么要求吗？”
渔夫回答说：“她想做教皇。”
比目鱼说：“好吧，她现在已经是教皇了，你回去吧。”
渔夫回到家，看见一座由许多宫殿围城的大教堂，里面灯火通明。妻子身上穿着金子制成的衣服，头上戴着巨大的金冠，坐在豪华的宝座上，威武极了，面前还跪着许多国王和主教。
渔夫走上前去，恭敬地说：“太太，你现在做了教皇，什么都有了，不会再有要求了吧？”
妻子回答说：“暂时没有了，不过还可以再考虑考虑。”
到了晚上，妻子不停地想应该再向比目鱼要点什么。她看见月光从窗户照射进来，心想：“怎么月亮还不下去，太阳还不上来呢？要是我能控制它们的升落，不，是控制一切事物，那该多好。”
