The rise of 'bai lan’: why China’s frustrated youth are ready to 'let it rot’

“摆烂”二字负面消极色彩极重,不同于“顺其自然(let nature take its course)”,《卫报》将其译为“let it rot”,可谓简洁有力。

The phrase, bai lan, which has its origin in NBA games, means a voluntary retreat from pursuing certain goals because one realises they are simply too difficult to achieve.

To languish; decline:

He was thrown into one of Napoleon's dungeons and left to rot. (American Heritage Dictionary)

Most governments simply leave the long-term jobless to rot on the dole. (Collins Dictionary)

曾见一首网络小众歌曲,曲名是“Leave Me to Rot With the Roses”,歌词这样写道:

I got a death wish on my mind

And I’m running out of time

Now I’m too tired to try

Yah I’m too tired to

Leave me to rot with the roses

Leave me to rot with the roses

Now I'm too tired to try. Leave me to rot with the roses.
