 英语·词汇提升 What is the best way to improve your vocabulary? 增加词汇量的最佳方式是什么呢？ If you ask this question to English teachers or other English learners, 假如你询问英语老师或者其他英语学习者 they will tell you the same thing. 他们将会告诉你相同的方法 They’ll tell you 他们会说 that the best way to build your vocabulary is to learn vocabulary in context by listening and reading a lot. 增加词汇量最好的方式就是听读大量文本 从中学习词汇 And I completely agree with that. 我完全同意这个观点 That is the best way to increase your vocabulary. 这是增加词汇量的最佳途径 So this is common sense, right? 所以这是常识 对吗？ Everybody knows that. 人人都知道的 This topic is so boring. 这个话题太无聊了 But there’s a problem. 但出现了个问题 Common sense is not common action. 共识并非意味共同的行动 Everybody knows how to improve their vocabulary,人 人都知道如何增加他们的词汇量 but most people don’t do it 但大多数人不这样做 Because they spend too much time on things 因为他们花费过多时间 like social media and funny cat videos. Now, 在社交媒体以及有趣的猫咪视频 if regular listening and reading is a common practice 现在 假设定期听力和阅读已是你的习惯 for you, then congratulations. 那么 这是值得庆贺的事 You don’t need to watch this video. 你不用观看这个视频了 But if it’s not a common practice for you yet, 但如果你还未养成习惯 let me convince you to start listening and reading on a regular basis. 就让我说服你定期练习听力和阅读 I’m going to share with you two other benefits you’ll get from applying this habit. 我会与你分享你将从这个习惯中获得的另外两种好处， So let’s get started. 那让我们开始吧 The first benefit you’ll get is”intuition.” 你将获得的第一个好处就是“直觉” What is intuition? Well, 什么是直觉？ let’s say that you come across a multiple choice question about English grammar. 好 让我们细说，当你遇到英语语法多选题时 You look at the choices and you know immediately what the correct answer is. 你盯着选项 立刻明白哪个是正确答案 You don’t know the grammar rule that explainsit. 你无需明白其中的语法规则 There’s no reasoning behind it. 背后没有任何推理 It just feels right. 仅仅是感觉对了 That’s intuition. 那就是直觉 It comes from taking in a lot of input by listening and reading. 它来源于大量听力和阅读的输入 Unfortunate， some people don’t appreciatethe power of intuition 不幸的是 一些人不认同直觉的力量 They learn vocabulary in a very strange way. 他们以非常奇怪的方式学习词汇 They don’t learn words in context. Instead, 不在文本中学习单词 they find a list of words and memorize the meaning of each word one by one. 而是找个单词清单依次记忆每一个单词的含义 This seems like a good idea. 这似乎是个好主意 They’re learning a lot of new words in a short period of time. 他们在短期内学到大量新单词 There’s only one problem with this. 只存在一个问题 It’s stupid. 这太笨了 Just because we know the meaningof a word doesn’t mean that we can use it. 我们知道单词的含义，并不意味着懂得遣词造句 It’s not enough. 这是远远不够的 We also need to know how the word is used. Now, 我们还需知道这个单词如何使用 I’m sure that you already know this,right? 我确信你已经明白了 对吗？ You’re not one of those people. 你并不在那些人之中 You already know that it’s much better to learn vocabulary by listening and reading. 你已经明白更好的学习单词的方式是通过听力和阅读 Because when you do that, 因为当你这么做时 you’re not only improving your vocabulary but also grammar, 你不单单提高了词汇量 还有语法 sentence structure, and so on. 句法结构 等等 Over time, you will become an independentlearner. 随着时间流逝 你会成为一个自主学习者 It means that you’ll have the ability 这意味着你拥有了 to improve your English without help from other people. 无需依靠他人而提升英语的能力 And that’s really cool. 这是很酷的事情 Let’s talk about the second benefit of thishabit. 让我们聊聊关于这个习惯的第二个好处 The second benefit is an increase in brainpower. 就是提升你的脑力 Just like how a muscle needs physical exercise to become stronger,your brain needs mental exercise to grow as well. 正如肌肉通过体育锻炼变得强壮你的大脑也需要通过智力训练去成长 Regular listening and reading is a great mentalexercise. 定期练习听力和阅读是一种极好的智力训练 It improves so many functions of the brain. 可以改善多种大脑机能 When you listen to someone speaking, you haveto stay focused. 当你听某人谈话时 你必须保持专注 This improves your attention. 这会改善你的注意力 And if they’re speaking really fast, 如果他们的语速太快 you’re also training your brain to process information faster, 你也能训练你的大脑快速处理信息 which leads to better comprehension. 从而产生更好的领悟力 Reading is great too. 阅读也是同样重要的 It improves your memory. 它能改善你的记忆力 When you read a novel, 当你阅读一本小说时 you need to remember lots of details like the names of the characters, 你需要记忆大量细节 例如角色的名字他们的背景 情节 等等 their backgrounds, the plot, and so on.
