gout occurs when uric acid builds up in your body. normally uric acid dissolves in the blood,

but it can build up and form needle-like crystals. 

formation of these crystals causes swollen red hot and stiff joints，

inflammation of the synovial membrane known as synovitis causes pain and stiffness. 

erosion of the cartilage covering articular surfaces of the joint causes chondral damage and arthritis may result. 

this may lead to destruction and deformity of the joint.
