01 dead of night 深夜；夜深人静的时候 半夜三更之时，不仅是静悄悄，更是死一般的沉寂。联想到此，dead of night的意思也就不难理解了。它表达的就是“深夜；夜深人静的时候”。 ▶ All three incidents occurred in the dead of night. 三起事件都发生在深夜。 ▶ I crept out of bed in the dead of night and sneaked downstairs. 深夜我悄悄地从床上爬起来，蹑手蹑脚地下了楼。 02 hard sell Hard是硬的，sell是卖，hard sell也就是强硬推销。可直接从字面上理解。 ▶ I don't like his hard sell approach. 我不喜欢他强行推销的做法。 ▶ But the salesman gave me a hard sell so I ended up with stuff I didn't need. 但推销员进行了强硬推销，所以我最终买了些我不需要的东西。 03 sell a bill of goods 以花言巧语骗得同意 A bill of goods的意思是进货单。如果有人要你出钱买的只是货单，他很可能在行骗，因为货单只是一纸空文而已。他只是以此为手段骗取信任。可见sell a bill of goods意思就是以花言巧语骗取信任。 ▶ My friends, my opponent is selling you a bill of goods when he promises to spend more on schools and cut taxes too. 我的对手既保证要给学校多拨款，又答应减税，其实这两者不可兼得，这些完全是花言巧语。 ▶ She tried to sell me a bill of goods, but I wouldn't listen to her. 她想向我兜售她的那一路货，可我不会听信她的。 04 sell down the river (为获得个人利益或好处而)出卖，背叛 这个说法得追溯到美国实行黑奴制度的时代。当时一名黑奴的最大悲剧可能就是被转卖给密西西比河下游的另一个主人。因为那意味着妻离子散的命运和在棉花地里累断筋骨的操劳。所以sell down the river就是出卖某人、令人陷入厄运的意思。 ▶ He sold us down the river, and the new owners brought in their own people and fired us. 他就出卖了我们的利益。新老板把自己人都拉进公司来，却把我们炒了鱿鱼。 05 sell somebody short 小看某人 这个短语的意思很像中国俗语'把人瞧扁了'，也就是没看到某人的长处。 ▶ Don't sell that man short.
