说说中外哲学中的“相”

"相" (xiang) has rich connotations in the field of philosophy in both eastern and western cultures. In eastern philosophy, "相" often expresses the understanding of the interrelationships among all things in the world, while in western philosophy, "相" is understood as a mode, nature, or concept of existence, or as relativity and relativism. In this article, I will explore the origins and meanings of "相" in both eastern and western philosophy in more detail.

I. "相" in Eastern Philosophy

In Chinese philosophy, the word "相" already had rich connotations in the pre-Qin period. The Yi Jing (Book of Changes) states that "there is nothing in the world that is unchanging," which encompasses the meaning of interrelatedness, interaction, and transformation. The Dao De Jing states that "Great music is rarefied sound; great form has no form; the Way is concealed and has no name," emphasizing the importance of "相" in all things in the world. In Buddhism, the theory of "Dependent Origination" expresses the idea of causal relationships and mutual dependence. In general, in Eastern philosophy, "相" embodies the idea of interdependence and interconnectedness among people, nature, and all things, emphasizing the holistic and common aspects of existence.

II. "相" in Western Philosophy

In contrast to the emphasis on "相" in Eastern philosophy, Western philosophy understands "相" as a mode or nature of existence. In ancient Greek philosophy, "相" was understood as the nature or essence of things. Plato believed that there were two forms of existence: one was material substance, and the other was the form or essence of things, which was intangible and constituted the meaning, substance or essence of things. After the emergence of relativity theory, philosophy further developed the understanding of "相". Einstein's theory of relativity introduced the concept of "relativity", which states that any physical phenomenon cannot exist independently of the choice of the reference frame, and different reference frames can  lead to different physical descriptions and results. This notion of relativity not only expanded the scope of physics but also brought a kind of relativistic thinking to the philosophical realm. The relativistic view of philosophy believed that the existence of any entity is relative to its relationship with other entities, and there is no inherent essential attribute. Heidegger's "Being and Time" proposed the theory of "worldly concern," which, starting from the perspective of the existence of individuals, believes that human existence is based on the influence of the surrounding world, that is, there is a relationship of mutual influence between the existence and surrounding world.

III. Differences and Similarities between "相" in Eastern and Western Philosophy

It can be found that there are some differences and similarities between the "相" concepts in Eastern and Western philosophy. Firstly, in Eastern philosophy, "相" emphasizes the understanding of the whole and common aspects of existence, while Western philosophy emphasizes the essence and characteristics of things. Secondly, in Eastern philosophy, "相" expresses the meaning of interdependence, causality, and interaction among things, while in Western philosophy, "相" is mainly expressed as a mode of existence or an element of physical phenomena. Moreover, in Eastern philosophy, "相" is regarded as a spiritual existence, which is an intangible and immaterial existence. In contrast, in Western philosophy, "相" is more often understood as a physical phenomenon or a constituent element of material existence.

In conclusion, the understanding of "相" in both Eastern and Western philosophy has some differences. However, these differences do not prevent us from discovering the common connotations contained in the "相" concept, such as relationships, connections, interdependence, and commonality. These connotations are the necessary intellectual qualities required to understand the world, explore truth, and seek harmony.
