The arterial supply to the foot consists of two main branches: the plantar and the dorsal.The plantar branch originates from the posterior tibial artery, which gives off its calcaneal branch to supply the heel region. The posterior tibial artery then divides into the medial and lateral plantar arteries, which run along the medial and lateral sides of the sole of the foot, respectively. The plantar arch is an anastomosis of the lateral plantar artery and the dorsalis pedis artery, which connects the plantar and dorsal branches. The plantar arch gives rise to four plantar metatarsal arteries, which further divide into digital arteries to supply the toes.The dorsal branch is formed by the dorsalis pedis artery, which is a continuation of the anterior tibial artery. The dorsalis pedis artery passes over the dorsum of the foot, between the first and second toes.
