Note-taking

01

 What is Note-taking?

Note-taking is writing down (or otherwise recording) the most important information from a source (this could be a lecture, an article, a book or a seminar, for example). To do this, you need to read or listen actively to select the most important information and record it efficiently.

02

Why is it important for university students?

Because you will have to take in so much information, it is vital that you use a system of recording the key points and data so that they can later be accessed, reviewed and used to inform your work. Successful note-taking (or note-making) includes being able to select the most important information and record it quickly, accurately and systematically, so that it will be useful later on. If you try to write down everything, especially in a live lecture, you will miss the most important points. Clearly then, good note-taking is another essential academic skill, and mastering it will make your life at university a lot easier.

03

How can I improve my note-taking skill?

Many students find it useful to develop a particular note-taking style, such as the Cornell Method (see the image below). You may find different methods work better for you with different types of input.

In addition, try writing notes by hand and on a laptop or other device and see which works better for you. Remember – good notes should help you recall or visualize the material you studied, so try simple techniques such as colour-coding, highlighting, underlining and the use of diagrams.

With time, you should also try to learn shorthand techniques such the use of symbols and abbreviations to enable you to quickly produce comprehensible notes.

Examples of symbols

>  greater than大于

<  smaller than小于

+/-  approximately大约

Examples of abbreviations

uni. 大学 = university

Prob. 可能= probably

tech. 技术 = technology

In addition, it is widely believed in academia that paraphrasing what authors or lecturers say can help you remember content much better than just copying exactly what you read or hear. This is because your brain has to engage more with the content if you rewrite it. What is more, paraphrasing will improve your vocabulary and writing skills, so this is very important area to work on.
