海南试水低空飞行
China began allowing helicopters to fly in low-altitude airspace on Friday over the tourist island Hainan on a trial basis, Xinhua reports. The aim is to eventually open a part of the country's tightly controlled airspace to private aircraft. Four helicopters were manned by eight pilots from Shanghai-based Zhengyang Investment Group. They are expected to conduct test flights in the sky, 1,000 meters above the ground in Hainan over the next two months. The flight test will collect data for low-altitude flying and test the ground control system's response to emergencies.
据新华社报道，周五，我国首次允许直升机在旅游胜地海南试水低空空域飞行，目的就是要为私人飞机在严格管控的空域中争得一席之地。未来两个月内，来自上海正阳投资集团的八名飞行员将驾驶4架直升飞机在海南上空1000米处试飞。届时，他们将收集低空飞行数据并检测地面控制系统的应急能力。

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak refused on Saturday to bow to demands that he resign after ordering troops and tanks into cities in an attempt to quell an explosion of street protests against his 30-year rule, Reuters reports. Mubarak dismissed the Cabinet and called for national dialogue to avert chaos after a day of battles between police and protesters. Medical sources said at least 24 people had been killed and over 1,000 injured in clashes in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria. The unprecedented unrest has sent shock waves through the Middle East and unsettled global financial markets on Friday. A Buddhist monk could face five years in prison after becoming the first casualty of a stringent anti-smoking law in Bhutan, Reuters reports. The monk has been charged with consuming and smuggling contraband tobacco after being caught with 72 packets of chewing tobacco. Bhutan, which vowed to become the first smoke-free nation, banned the sale of tobacco in 2005. But with a thriving smuggling operation from neighboring India, the ban failed to make much of an impact. The new law that came into force this month has granted police powers to enter homes, threatening jail for shopkeepers who sell tobacco and smokers who fail to provide customs receipts for imported cigarettes.

Ugandan police have escorted a priest away from the funeral of a gay rights activist after he told homosexuals to repent, sparking scuffles, BBC reports. Hundreds of people had gathered for David Kato's burial in his home village near the capital, Kampala. His colleagues say he was beaten to death at his home Wednesday, although police deny he was killed because of his sexuality. Homosexual acts are illegal in Uganda and can be punished by 14-year prison sentences. An MP recently tried to increase the penalties to include the death sentence in some cases.

短信提早引爆人体炸弹 A 'Black Widow' suicide bomber planned a terrorist attack in central Moscow on New Year's Eve but was killed when an unexpected text message set off her bomb too early, the Daily Telegraph reports. The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt on a busy square near Red Square on New Year's Eve. Security sources believe a spam message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours before the planned attack triggered her suicide belt, killing her but nobody else.

A report in the latest public health journal of the Centers for Disease Control warns that cuddling with pets puts you at risk of catching some icky bugs, CNN reports. Pets can bring a wide range of zoonotic pathogens into our environment. Zoonotic pathogens are infectious agents that can be transmitted between animal and humans. The probability of getting sick from sharing your bed with your pet is extremely rare, said lead author Bruno Chomel, a professor of zoonoses at University of California Davis. But he warned that children and people who have compromised immune system should be aware of the risks.

Redditch council in Worcestershire, UK is proposing to save money – and combat global warming – by heating a leisure center and swimming pool using heat generated by the crematorium next door, the Guardian reports. The council, which touts it as the first project of its kind in the UK, is holding briefings later this week with faith groups, funeral directors and members of the public to discuss the scheme.
