从时间的沉淀来看图像的意义

    有空还是聊聊关于摄影这点事,看到一篇关于著名摄影师雍和拍摄经验的访谈,其中就讲到了摄影作品经过时间沉淀后会产生“包浆”。

 于是翻一些原来拍摄的照片,看看它们经过多年的沉淀后是否也有了“包浆”。(包浆是古玩行业专业术语,指文物表面由于长时间氧化形成的氧化层。“包浆”其实就是“光泽”,专指古物器物经过长年久月之后,在表面上形成这样一层自然的光泽。在摄影作品上,我的理解是这些图像上留下了当年特有的时代印记。)

Reflecting on the Significance of Images Through the Passage of Time

Let's delve into the realm of photography and discuss the concept of "patina" that emerges as images undergo the sedimentation of time. I recently came across an interview discussing the experience of photographing the Lama Temple, where it was mentioned that photographic works, after years of maturation, develop a certain "patina."

It would be intriguing to revisit some of the original photographs taken and observe whether, after years of sedimentation, they too have acquired a "patina." In the realm of antiquities, "patina" is a specialized term in the industry, referring to the oxidized layer that forms on the surface of artifacts over time. This "patina" essentially represents a natural sheen, specifically denoting the unique temporal imprints left on ancient objects. In the context of photographic works, I interpret this as the images retaining the distinctive temporal imprints of the era in which they were captured.

This is the diving pool in Shanghai from the 1980s. At that time, the ten-meter diving platform stood as the sole one in the entire city of Shanghai. Presently, this location has been transformed into a symphony hall.

A glimpse into family life in the 1980s reveals a 17-inch black and white television set, requiring an external antenna for reception. A dual-purpose recorder capable of handling two cards and a Nintendo gaming console adorned the entertainment setup. Hand-knitted wool sweaters and overalls completed the attire, embodying the era's fashion sense.

  上世纪八十年代末,街头的麦当劳叔叔。一不留神麦当劳叔叔不见了。

In the late 1980s, the iconic McDonald's mascot, the McDonald's Uncle, could often be spotted on the streets. However, in the blink of an eye, the McDonald's Uncle vanished without a trace.

  早年也喜欢拍摄所谓的街拍作品,当然不是专业记者,拍摄的题材和路子完全不同,其中还有一部分是为家人曾经拍摄的纪念照。最早的部分也就是上世纪八十年代开始的作品,那时候还是限于经济能力,胶片实在拍不起,然后到了数码相机的时代,有时间就出去放手拍一些自认为值得留存的内容。

  那么几十年过去了,回过头来看看这些照片经过时间的沉淀是否值得拍摄?是否也有了时代的印记?

In the bygone days, I had a penchant for capturing what one might term street photography. Admittedly, I was no professional journalist; my subjects and approach diverged entirely. Among these works lay a portion dedicated to memorial photos taken for my family. The earliest pieces trace back to the onset of the 1980s, a time when financial constraints limited my ability to indulge in film photography. As the era of digital cameras unfurled, whenever time allowed, I ventured out to capture moments that I deemed worthy of preservation.

Now, several decades have elapsed, prompting a retrospective gaze at these photos. Have they, through the sedimentation of time, proven to be worth the capture? Do they too bear the imprints of their era?

  1988年左右,人民公园荷花池边上,女士是柯湘式短发(柯湘是上世纪七十年代被“旗手”塑造的京剧《杜鹃山》中的高大上形象,她的发型一时风靡整个大陆,直到八十年代还流行于世。

  百褶裙,当时化纤纺织物已经解决了民众的穿着问题,百褶裙在相当长一段时间流行在各大城市的女性穿着中。小方领白衬衫,简约、朴素。

  男士穿的是小方领短袖衬衫,小方领衬衫是不能穿在西服里面的,短袖衬衫上用的比较多。

Around 1988, by the lotus pond at People's Park, a lady sported the Ke Xiang-style short hairdo. Ke Xiang, an elevated figure from the 1970s Beijing opera "Dujian Mountain," popularized a hairstyle that swept across the mainland and remained fashionable into the 1980s.

She wore a pleated skirt, as synthetic fabrics had already revolutionized the public's dressing choices. The pleated skirt trended among urban women for a considerable period. Paired with a simple white shirt featuring a small square collar, the ensemble exuded understated elegance.

The gentleman is dressed in a short-sleeved shirt with a small square collar. It is worth noting that a small square collar shirt is not suitable for wearing under a suit; it is more commonly worn with short sleeves.

  在老城厢看到穿高跟鞋的已经吸人眼球了,更何况还有皮短裙,难怪边上结绒线阿姨侧目。

Captured in 2018 on Danfeng Road, the scene featured high heels and a leather miniskirt.

In the old city quarter, the sight of high heels alone drew attention, let alone when paired with a leather miniskirt. It's no wonder the nearby knitting aunt cast a sidelong glance in surprise.

  我们可以发现如果是纯拍摄的人像作品,那就只能从细节上来辨别,比方说服饰或者说是行为上,当然这只有那个时代过来的人才会明白那个时代的穿着究竟应该如何?所以我们这代从上世纪七八十年代就对这座城市有记忆的人在看类似于电视剧《繁花》的时代剧就会下意识根据自己的记忆来判断剧中人是否被穿越。

In the realm of pure portraiture, one can discern distinctions primarily through details, such as attire or behavior. Only individuals who have traversed through that era can truly comprehend the nuances of fashion and conduct prevalent during that time. Hence, those of our generation who hold memories of this city dating back to the 1970s and 1980s, when watching period dramas like the television series "Blooming Flowers," instinctively gauge whether the characters are authentically portrayed based on their own recollections.

  2009年拍摄于复兴东路天桥上,擦皮鞋在旧中国是在大城市谋生的最起码手段,最早我们从三毛流浪记上就可以看到,当然改革开放后,来城市打工者也会凭一己之力先从最低端的谋生手段开始,天桥是一个可以躲避城管的地方,但是现在基本上这样的可能都没了。

Captured in 2009 on the pedestrian overpass of Fuxing East Road, shoe shining was once a fundamental means of livelihood in old China's big cities. As depicted in the wanderings of the literary figure Sanmao, it was a starting point for many who sought work in the urban landscape post-economic reforms. The pedestrian overpass served as a refuge from urban management, yet nowadays, such scenarios have largely disappeared.

  2012年拍摄于黄河路,现在排队买蝴蝶酥的马路对面,卖“神奇电视棒”的小贩。当时已经开始要安装有线电视的路由器才能看电视,于是“神奇电视棒”出炉,现在到黄河路打卡的朋友知道这段历史吗?

Captured in 2012 on Huanghe Road, across the street from where people now queue to buy butterfly pastries, there used to be a vendor selling "magical TV sticks." At that time, installing a cable TV router was necessary to watch television, giving rise to the popularity of these "magical TV sticks." Do friends who visit Huanghe Road for photo opportunities nowadays know about this piece of history?

  2012年拍摄于方浜西路中华路二手市场外面,这是一个二手货和劣质小五金、小电器的市场,但是价格便宜,适合不会上网购物的老年人这种淘旧货的心态,生意一直不错,随着周边的土地征收,连同老西门花鸟市场一起消失了。

  关键是沿街的吆喝声没了。

Captured in 2012 outside the Second-Hand Market on Fangbang West Road and Zhonghua Road, this was a marketplace for second-hand goods, substandard hardware, and small appliances. Despite the low prices, it catered to elderly individuals who preferred the nostalgic thrill of hunting for old items rather than shopping online. Business thrived, but with the land acquisition in the vicinity, this market, along with the Old West Gate Flower and Bird Market, vanished.

The crucial absence lies in the disappearance of the lively street vendors' calls.

  2012年拍摄于虹口区东余杭路春阳里附近,现在的春阳里局部已经进行了改造,倒马桶已经成为历史,最近几年上海的旧改相当迅速,大部分上海人都有了自己独立的卫生间,如厕、洗浴都已经不成问题。

Captured in 2012 near Chunyangli on Dongyuhang Road in Hongkou District, the neighborhood has undergone significant transformations. The practice of emptying chamber pots is now a thing of the past, as Shanghai has rapidly progressed in urban renewal in recent years. The majority of Shanghai residents now enjoy the luxury of private bathrooms, ensuring that basic hygiene needs such as using the toilet and bathing are no longer concerns.

  2012年拍摄于老城厢,恰逢路过的箍桶匠,箍桶这门手艺是因为该区域民众的需求,这个区域大部分居民家中没有卫生设施,无论是澡盆还是早期的木制马桶修复都需要这门手艺。随着市民的生活空间有了很大的改善,这样的手艺人已经没有用武之地了。

Captured in 2012 in the old city area, I encountered a cooper passing by. The craft of coopering was essential due to the needs of the local residents in this area, where most households lacked sanitary facilities. Whether repairing bathtubs or early wooden chamber pots, this craft was indispensable. However, as citizens' living spaces have significantly improved, artisans practicing such crafts have become obsolete.

  2012年拍摄于河南北路七浦路天桥上,卖刨黄瓜片刀具的小贩。现在的七浦路服饰市场已经日薄西山,这其中有电商的因素,也有人们对服装质量要求提高的因素,所以原来人流如织的天桥也很少有人去走,再说了,遍地都是城管,在上海街头随意设摊的可能性极小。

Captured in 2012 on the pedestrian overpass of Henan North Road and Qipu Road, there was a vendor selling tools for slicing cucumber. Nowadays, the Qipu Road clothing market has declined, with factors including the rise of e-commerce and increased consumer demands for clothing quality. Consequently, the once bustling pedestrian overpass sees few passersby. Moreover, the presence of urban management officers is ubiquitous, making it highly unlikely for vendors to set up stalls freely on the streets of Shanghai.

  这是2014年6月拍摄于永康路的一个场景,没多久这个地方开始大规模整顿,于是有一个自发形成;让年轻人和老外们喜欢的马路又消失了,目前这条小马路的两侧老弄堂都已经进入土地征收的范围,拆还是改造已经不重要了,因为原来类似于田子坊这样的氛围已经不可能重现了。

This scene was captured in June 2014 on Yongkang Road. Not long after, this area underwent large-scale renovations, leading to the spontaneous disappearance of a street that was beloved by young people and foreigners. Currently, both sides of this small street, lined with old alleyways, have fallen within the scope of land acquisition. Whether demolition or renovation occurs is now insignificant, as the once unique atmosphere resembling Tianzifang is unlikely to be replicated again.

   这是2014年拍摄于威海路90弄口那个专门做鸟笼的手艺人摊位前,在这个路口原来还有做锻打熟铁锅的手艺人,因为锤击的声音太吵搬离此地,而这个鸟笼的摊位没多久也消失了,于是这里又少了一点市井气息。

  在上海这座城市里,但凡是手艺人基本上都不可能在自家弄堂口或马路上设摊,当然作为老上海人手艺的传承也早就是个问题,这样的场景也就一去不复返了。

This was captured in 2014 in front of the stall of a craftsman specializing in making birdcages at Lane 90 of WeiHai Road. At this intersection, there used to be a craftsman forging iron pots, but due to the loud noise of hammering, they relocated. Shortly after, the birdcage stall also vanished, further diminishing the local neighborhood ambiance.

In the city of Shanghai, it is nearly impossible for craftsmen to set up stalls in their own alleyways or on the streets. Moreover, the issue of passing down traditional craftsmanship among old Shanghai residents has long been a concern. Such scenes are now a thing of the past, unlikely to return.

  这是2017年拍摄于老城厢的北孔家弄,现在被称之为老城厢的已经成为一个过去式,这块地方被围起来拆房,不准进去拍摄,甚至于不准航拍,于是里面原来门面不错的石库门建筑也都悄悄地牺牲在推土机下了,还好我们事先都已经有过记录:#老寿眼中的上海#惜别老西门

This scene was captured in 2017 at Beikong Lane in the old town area. What was once known as the old town has now become a thing of the past. This area has been cordoned off for demolition, prohibiting entry for photography, including aerial shots. Consequently, the charming Shikumen buildings inside have silently succumbed to the bulldozers. Fortunately, we had already documented everything in advance: #Shanghai through the eyes of the old generation# Farewell to Old Ximen.

  这是2018年6月拍摄于方浜中路,原来被称之为上海老街的地方,上海老街早年是作为豫园商城拓展的一部分,当时购买一个店铺仅要十万元,解决了很多想要在上海创业的试水者,现在这里还是作为大豫园板块的一部分,但是老街消失了,今后还会重建类似于旅游景区的仿古老街吗?是否还会重新捞起上海老街的名称?

This was captured in June 2018 on Fangbang Middle Road, once known as a part of the old streets of Shanghai. The old streets of Shanghai were originally an extension of the Yuyuan Shopping Mall. Back then, purchasing a shop only cost ten thousand yuan, providing an opportunity for many aspiring entrepreneurs to test the waters in Shanghai. Presently, this area remains a part of the greater Yuyuan complex. However, the old streets have vanished. Will there be future reconstruction of a faux antique old street resembling a tourist attraction? Will the name "Old Streets of Shanghai" be revived once more?

  这是2018年拍摄于复兴公园那个众人大合唱的小亭子,在这里的指挥都颇具专业,上海电视台也曾经在此拍摄过纪录片,口罩事件后这里再也没有出现大合唱的朋友,他们是否都转场虹口公园、中山公园了?今后还会有吗?

This photograph was taken in 2018 at the pavilion in Fuxing Park, where a large choir of people gathered to sing. The conductors here displayed remarkable professionalism, with even Shanghai TV once filming a documentary in this very spot. Following the mask-wearing incident, the friends who used to participate in these grand choruses have not been seen here since. Have they all relocated to Hongkou Park or Zhongshan Park? Will such gatherings occur again in the future?

  这是拍摄于2016年5月的乔家栅路,居民在雨中继续打麻将,小屋顶上有曾经乔家栅的明显标记立柱,就目前来说居民已经搬走,这根立柱还在,那么等到土地有人接盘了,它会不会因为碍手碍脚被端走? 

This photo was taken in May 2016 on Qiaojia Lane. Despite the rain, residents persisted in playing mahjong. The small roof still bears a prominent pillar marking the former Qiaojia Lane. Currently, the residents have moved away, yet the pillar remains. When new owners take over the land, will this pillar be removed as an obstruction? 

  又回到金陵东路了,这是拍摄于2015年10月金陵东路91弄的金陵旅社门前,曾经隐藏在小弄堂里的旅社是外地出差人员的首选,现在人们的生活水平都提高了,就是自费出门旅游都找四五星级酒店了,这样的小旅社早就没了市场。

  现在的居住条件也都好了,打麻将也不需要在弄堂里搭台子。

Returning to Jinling East Road once more, this photograph was taken in October 2015 in front of Jinling Hostel at Lane 91. This hostel, once tucked away in a small alley, was the top choice for out-of-town business travelers. Nowadays, as people's living standards have risen, even for personal trips, they seek out four or five-star hotels. Consequently, small hostels like this one have long lost their market appeal. With improved living conditions, there is no longer a need to set up mahjong tables in the alleyways.

  接下来就是和建筑或者是环境融合的作品,由于这几十年上海的城市变迁过于迅速,以至于一个不是经常在城市的各个角落中穿行的人,都搞不清其中的变化,所以这些作品需要对这个区域有过曾经的记忆,才会意识到此情此景已经不可再现,于是它就成了城市印象中的一部分。

The subsequent category comprises works that blend seamlessly with architecture or the environment. Given the swift urban transformations Shanghai has undergone in recent decades, even those who do not frequent every nook and cranny of the city find themselves befuddled by the changes. Thus, these works require a prior memory of the area to truly grasp that certain scenes are now irrevocably lost, thereby cementing them as integral components of the urban impression.

  这是拍摄于2018年6月,淡水路223弄2号这个石库门豪宅的客堂间里,经过租客的同意拍摄了这张照片,这是一栋有壁炉的石库门建筑,是这条弄堂乃至这条马路上体量最大的石库门建筑,目前也已经被土地征收,那么这栋楼还会留存吗?会不会用脚手架遮挡后用推土机推平?

This photograph was taken in June 2018 in the living room of 2, Lane 223, Danshui Road, a luxurious stone-gate mansion. With the tenant's permission, this picture was captured. Featuring a fireplace, this stone-gate structure is the largest of its kind on this lane and even on this street. Currently, it has been acquired for land requisition. Will this building be preserved? Or will it be obscured by scaffolding and eventually demolished by bulldozers?

  这是拍摄于2016年12月凤阳路上的葱油饼摊位,当时的价格是4元一只,没多久又拍了一次是5元一只,现在是6元一只,不知道他们最终会涨到多少元一只?会摆到什么时候?

This picture was taken in December 2016 at a scallion pancake stall on Fengyang Road. At that time, the price was 4 yuan each. Shortly after, it was captured again at 5 yuan each, and currently, they are priced at 6 yuan each. It is uncertain how much the price will eventually rise to per pancake. How long will they continue to sell at this price?

  这是拍摄于2015年7月,广东路上的申万宏源证券交易厅,恰逢记者也在采访,因为行情不好,兜了一圈没人愿意接受采访,想想平时看到财经频道上那些侃侃而谈的镜头真的是来之不易。

  这样稍大规模的交易大厅越来越少了,基本上都是老年人找人闲聊孵空调的场所,他们如同小河浜里的浮萍,田野里的韭菜,随波逐流,任人宰割。

This photograph was taken in July 2015 at the Shenwan Hongyuan Securities Trading Hall on Guangdong Road. Coincidentally, a journalist was conducting interviews at the time. Due to the unfavorable market conditions, after circling around, no one was willing to be interviewed. Reflecting on how challenging it is to capture those articulate moments seen on financial news channels. 

These relatively large-scale trading halls are becoming increasingly scarce. They have essentially transformed into places where elderly individuals gather to chat and bask in the air conditioning. They resemble floating duckweed in a small river or chives in a field, drifting with the currents and susceptible to exploitation.

  这是拍摄于2015年8月金陵东路被土地征收前,沿街糖炒栗子小店的孩子在室外做功课。土地征收解决了居住局促的同时也对小商小铺带来了很大的影响,因为原来市口人流突然减少,换地方重新开店面临着租金上涨,所以我们不停的在说营商环境在变好时,不要忘了弱小群体,而真正活跃市场的才是他们。

This photograph was taken in August 2015 on Jinling East Road before it was acquired for land requisition. Children from a street chestnut candy stall were seen doing their homework outdoors. While land requisition addressed cramped living conditions, it also greatly impacted small businesses along the street. The sudden decrease in foot traffic at the original location led to increased rental costs when relocating, highlighting the challenges faced by these businesses. 

Amidst discussions about the improving business environment, it is crucial not to forget the vulnerable groups. It is these groups that truly animate the market. 

  这是拍摄于2016年5月南京路步行街河南中路一侧的快照摊,后面当时“老介福大楼”还没有“遥遥领先”,夜景慢门显示摊主在看手机,边上人流如潮,没有一个人正眼看一下这个快照点,可见快照这个行当随着智能手机的出现已经走到了尽头。

This snapshot was taken in May 2016 at a photo booth along one side of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street on Henan Middle Road. In the background, the "Lao Jiefu Building" was not yet "far ahead." The slow shutter speed night scene captured the booth owner looking at their phone, while a tide of passersby flowed by. Not a single person spared a glance at this photo spot, indicating that the photo booth trade has reached its end with the emergence of smartphones.

  然后到了2018年9月在南京路步行街世纪广场一侧又看到了一个快照摊位,拍摄中无意中拍到了这个骚老头,明显在用言语挑逗女摊主,可见做个小生意有多艰难。

  现在上海除了外滩江堤上还有快照点,其余的都已经被撤销,这个词汇不久也会成为过去式。

In September 2018, at Century Square on one side of Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, another photo booth was spotted. In the midst of capturing this scene, an audacious elderly gentleman was inadvertently photographed engaging in verbal flirtation with a female booth owner, highlighting the challenges of running a small business.

Currently, in Shanghai, apart from the photo spots along the Bund Riverside Promenade, all others have been dismantled. It won't be long before this term becomes a thing of the past.

  这张照片拍得比较早,2009年国庆节第二天的南京东路步行街,来自黑龙江的摄影师为了有一个高视点,用钓鱼竿自制了一个拍摄接杆,可以通过自制的遥控器操控快门。经过二十多年的演化,人们可以通过爬楼、无人机航拍来完成高视点的俯拍,同时现在的摄影器材只要你想得到,各种怪兵器都会有,器材也越来越小型化、专业化,在拍摄这张照片时,我就认定这会是一个历史性的画面,将来不可能会重复出现。

Taken on the second day of the National Day holiday in 2009, this photograph captures Nanjing East Road Pedestrian Street. A photographer from Heilongjiang ingeniously crafted a makeshift shooting pole using a fishing rod to achieve a higher vantage point, enabling remote shutter control through a self-made remote. 

Over the course of more than two decades, the evolution of photography has enabled individuals to achieve aerial shots from high viewpoints through methods such as climbing buildings or using drones. Moreover, with the availability of various unconventional photography tools, and the trend towards increasingly compact and specialized equipment, capturing unique perspectives has become more accessible. When capturing this particular image, I was convinced that it would be a historic moment, unlikely to be replicated in the future.

  再有的就是一些行业,由于谋生的手段和环境的改变,曾经在大上海从事的这份行业也就消失了,于是这样的图像再重新拍摄到的可能性几乎为零,而图像证明它又是确确实实的存在过。

Furthermore, there are works that depict certain industries that have vanished due to changes in livelihoods and environments. Occupations once prevalent in Greater Shanghai have now faded into obscurity, making the likelihood of capturing such images anew close to nil. Yet, these images stand as tangible proof of their once-existence, preserved for posterity.

 这里选取的是我随手选取的一小部分,也是抛开了那些以拍摄建筑物为主的题材,有些照片从目前来看还没有达到不可重复的阶段(还没有形成“包浆”),也许再经过十年的时间沉淀,又会有一部分照片翻出来看看很有意思,届时我们再来看看有什么好玩的东西。

The selection I have made here is merely a small fraction, excluding those primarily focused on capturing architectural subjects. Some photos, as it stands now, have not yet reached the stage of irreproducibility (have not acquired a "patina"). Perhaps, after another decade of maturation, a portion of these images will resurface with an intriguing appeal. At that juncture, we can revisit them to discover what fascinating elements they hold.
