It was only on the third day of our trip, following in the footsteps of those brave soldiers, that some small part of the suffering they endured finally came home to me.这次旅途的第三天，我就完全体会到了红军士兵当年的艰难困苦。
We had been driving for almost two hours through a cold September morning up a steep, winding mountain track that was eaten away by landslips from below and strewn with boulders from above. As we climbed ever higher, the clouds descended around us until all that could be seen ahead or to the side was a blanket of white.九月一个寒冷的早晨，我们沿陡峭蜿蜒的山路驱车近两个小时。山路下方遭滑坡的侵蚀，路面时不时被吞噬掉一大块；路面颠簸不平，布满了山上滚落的大石块。爬得越高，云层渐渐压下来，后来我们四周就都是茫茫云海了。
When we finally reached the summit of Jiajin Mountain, 4,114 meters above sea level, we clambered out of our bus into the thin air. The statistical recapitulation of the Long March is impressive. It shows that there was an average of almost a skirmish a day, somewhere on the line, while altogether fifteen whole days were devoted to major pitched battles. Out of a total of 368 days en route, 235 were consumed in marches by day, and 18 in marches by night...The Reds crossed eighteen mountain ranges, five of which were perennially snow-capped, and they crossed twenty-four rivers... The mean daily stage covered was 71 li, or nearly 24 miles - a phenomenal pace for a great army and its transport to average over some of the most hazardous terrain on earth.

当年的铁军团长耿飚的女儿耿莹在央视《开学第一课》节目中讲述父亲当年的故事。
'Wearing tattered straw sandals, a Red Army soldier had to march 120km day and night. In other words, students would have to walk 300 laps of the 400m track to equal that distance. Moreover, the Long March route was grueling, not smooth like a track,” said Geng.
节目中，她带来一双草鞋，她说，穿着这些简陋的草鞋，当年的战士一天一夜要走240里路。“孩子们可能没有概念。你们学校的跑道如果是400米的话，绕着跑道走300圈，就差不多是240里。而这还不是平坦的路，是爬山越岭。”
说完长征的路途，我们再看看参加了长征的人员情况。长征出发前，红军兵力20万人，但最终只有1/4左右的人数胜利会师于陕北。1955年，中国人民解放军首次授衔254名将帅，其中222人参加过长征。
红军的将领都非常年轻，平均只有25岁。（身为80后我深表惭愧……不对，我是暴露年龄了吗？） 
其中，各部队女红军人数总计超过2000人；最长者是57岁的徐特立，最小的是刚出生几天的新生儿，一位是贺龙之女贺捷生，另一位是任弼时之女任远征。
