(Article from: Scholastic Short Reads Plus, Level 4-Card 8, Non-fiction, GRL I, Lexile 430L) 阶段1 学生A和学生B分别在文章中做出了第一个标记,老师可以暂停阅读并做出示范; (T is for teacher, A is for student A, B is for student B) T: If I’m confused, I need to think about what I just read. If I can’t remember, I need to reread (or ask a question, make a connection, etc.) to understand. So, what’s your confusion? A: I don’t know the meaning of the word “sodium”. T: Can you try to reread the whole sentence and replace this word with the other one that make sense? A: (Reread this sentence) And all this flying causes butterflies to lose a lot of salt, or sodium, as scientists call it. 【fixing up by rereading】 A: Emm … Does the word “sodium” have the same meaning as salt? 【fixing up by replacement】 T: Yes! That’s great. The sodium is a way the scientists call salt. 针对学生A的困惑,教师引导他使用fix-up strategies中的方法reread和replace words you don’t know with words that make sense,解决这一问题后,学生A继续阅读; T: What’s your confusion? B: Why turtles and crocodiles have tears? T: You are wondering about the reason that turtles and crocodiles have tears. Could you please turn to next page and read one or two more paragraphs? B: (Student B turn to page 50, and read on the next two paragraphs)【fixing up by reading on】 T: How many reasons can you find? B: Two. T: What are they? B: First reason said when reptiles eat other animals, they cry. Second reason said they have tears to keep their eyes from drying out. T: Excellent!Keep going. The question I am asking myself: a) What is the similarity between crocodiles’ tears and turtles’ tears? b) Which reason best explains why reptiles have tears? Example: Guided writing by a fourth grader: When I read that “butterflies like the tears of crocodiles, too” I was confused. I wondered what is the similarity between crocodiles’ tears and turtles’ tears. I was thinking the tears of crocodiles have lots of salt, too. Because butterflies are salt seekers. After this article, I knew both turtles and crocodiles are reptiles. Reptiles have tears in their eyes all the time to keep their eyes from drying out. A long-time flying causes butterflies to lose much sodium, and drink reptiles’ tears can help them get salt. And so do the bees. When you are confused, stop and use fix-up strategies to clarify your confusion. |
