Spring Festival, also called asChinese New Year, indeed, is a festival which marks the beginning of a year inlunar calendars. It takes place in January or February. Chinese have many traditions on Spring Festival. A few days before thefestival, people make a kind of dumplings called jiaozi. Jiaozi means the oldyear goes away and new year comes, involving best wishes to familymembers. On the 24th of the 12th month in lunar calendar, people alwaysclean their house, which means sweeping all the bad luck of the old yearand wish they have a better luck in the new year.When the evening before the festival comes, a family always gathers tohave a big dinner which means in next year, the family will get together more.Having the dinner, the family will watch a special television show whichhas a history of 40 years. It's called Spring Festival Gala commonly by the audience.The origin of the Spring Festival was not sure yet, but what is most popularnow days is that a monster called Nian----means a year---- often comes into thevillage to rob villagers, so people set firecrackers to scare the monster away,then, it becomes a festival.Spring Festival is an important part of Chinese civilization, and foreignerscan learn many Chinese culture by the festival.
