The zodiac is a diagram used by astrologers to represent the positions of the planets and stars. The Chinese zodiac, or Sheng Xiao, is a repeating 12-year cycle of animal signs and their ascribed attributes, based on the lunar calendar. In order, the zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

古人认为，人的性格及命运与出生时的星象息息相关。那么，如何描述星象呢？ Zodiac （十二宫图）就是一个描述星象的常用工具。

古代将太阳的运行轨迹称为“黄道”，将黄道划分为等长的十二份，每一份称为一宫，合成为“黄道十二宫”。

在每一个宫附近，差不多正好分布有一个星座，包括：白羊座、金牛座、巨蟹座、狮子座等等。

每个人出生时，太阳所处的宫位就是你的“星座”，由于这些星座大部分都是以动物命名的，所以希腊人管这些星座称为zodiakos, 字面意思是“动物组成的环”，来源于词根zoion（动物）。英语单词zodiac和zoo都来源于这个词根。
