Mr Dursley might have been drifting into an uneasy sleep, but the cat on the wall outside was showing no sign of sleepiness. It was sitting as still as a statue, its eyes fixed unblinkingly on the far corner of Privet Drive.

德思礼先生迷迷糊糊的，本来可能胡乱睡上一觉，可花园墙头上那只猫却没有丝毫睡意。它卧在墙头上，宛如一座雕像，纹丝不动，目不转睛地盯着女贞路远处的街角。

独立主格结构：

独立主格不是主谓完整的简单句，而只是一个短语，用于修饰整个句子。通俗来说，独立主格就是有自己主语的状语成分。结构中的名词或者代词与其后的分词等构成主谓或主表关系。常见的结构有：

名词/代词+非谓语动词/形容词/副词/介词短语

1. The meeting being over, all of us went home.

   =When the meeting was over, all of us went home.(时间状语从句）
2. He rushed into the room, his face covered with sweat.
   =He rushed into the room, so his face was covered with sweat.(结果状语从句)
3. Her friends to come tonight, Lily is busy preparing the dinner.
   =Because her friends are to come tonight, Lily is busy preparing the dinner.(原因状语从句)
4. Computers very small, we can use them widely.
   =Though computers are very small, we can use them widely.(让步状语从句)
5. He sat at the table, head down.
6. The teacher came in, a book in his hand(book in hand).
7. It being a holiday, all the shops were shut.

从以上例句可以看出，独立主格中的名词或代词与其后的非谓语动词等构成逻辑上的主谓或主表关系，功能上相当于带有自己主语的状语从句，在中文翻译上与状语从句也没什么区别。该结构位置灵活，可以放在主句前或后，通常由逗号隔开。需要注意的是：独立主格结构与主句之间不能使用任何连接词。

今天分享的独立主格结构算是英语中比较难的一种结构了。平时考察的非谓语动词做状语已经让人很头疼了。我们要考虑非谓语动词的逻辑主语和主句主语保持一致。但是当非谓语动词的逻辑主语与句子主语不同的时候，我们需要添加它独自的主语，就有了今天的分享的独立主格结构。例如：

1. Being ill, I had to stay at home.

2. Mother being ill, I had to stay at home.

上面的两个例句中，句 1 使用了现在分词 being 做状语，它的逻辑主语就是句子主语 I，翻译为：因为生病，我不得不待在家里。句 2 中的充当状语的依旧是现在分词 being，但它的逻辑主语是 mother，与主句主语 I 不同，所以就称为独立主格结构，翻译为：因为我妈妈生病了，我不得不待在家里（照顾她）。
