On the ball 最早出现在20世纪初的美国棒球运动中。投手若技术高超，会被形容为 "have a lot on the ball"，意为"控球能力出色"。后来引申为形容人"机警，能力强，应对自如"。

关于这个习语的来历还有另一种说法，有人认为它源于篮球运动，形容球员能时刻紧盯球的位置并迅速抢断，有 Keep your eye on the ball (集中注意力) 的说法，后比喻工作高效，反应敏捷。

He is really on the ball when it comes to computer programming.
