这首诗歌的作者存在一些争议，但一般倾向认为本诗为 Mary Elizabeth Frye于1932年所作。 当时，有一名 德国犹太妇女Margaret Schwarzkopf 寄住在作者的家中。她的母亲的德国身患重病，让她十分担心。不过，由于当时德国反犹气氛弄些，人们警告她不要回德国。当她的母亲去世后，她伤心欲绝，对作者说自己甚至连“站到母亲墓前哭泣”的机会也没有（“she never had the chance to stand by her mother’s grave and shed a tear”）。Frye深受此事触动，从未写过任何诗作的她在一个纸购物袋上写下了这段诗。 1995年，这首诗在英国出版，获得了空前的关注，也打动了无数人。2004年，英国《泰晤士报》评论这首诗：”The verse demonstrated a remarkable power to soothe loss.
