读到一个句子：

The widely accepted idea of a cost-living crisis does not begin to capture the gravity

of what may lie ahead.   

这个句子在结构上应该说并不难，The widely accepted idea of a cost-living crisis （主

语；does not begin to capture the gravity of what may lie ahead. （谓语部分），其中

有一个名词从句 what may lie ahead 作介词 of 的宾语从句。但 not begin to capture 

the gravity of what may lie ahead 译成“不开始理解未来可能面临问题的严重性”, 觉得特

别别扭，应该如何正确理解这个句子的含义？

是的，not begin + 动词不定式 是句中理解的难点。not begin + 动词不定式动 是英语中的

一个特殊用法，在口语中用于表示强调否定语气,  意思是“毫不……”、“根本不……”。

例如：

Those measures do not even begin to address the problem.    

那些措施根本不能解决问题。

The size of the deal , a mere $ 526 m , does not begin to convey its implications.

这笔交易的规模仅为5.26亿美元，根本没有体现出它的意义。

Power companies' tiny increase in tariffs does not begin to offset the rise in

根本不会开车”，而不是 “我不开始开车” 。这样的误译可谓比比皆是。

原意：苏珊，咱们根本不用为彼得和大卫担心。
